Amrita Rao has always liked to keep her personal life private. Whether it was her longstanding relationship with RJ Anmol or their wedding later, it was all under wraps. But the couple seems to have changed now. They talk about their lives, right from their dating days till now, in different videos that they put up on their social media handles. Soon they will be revealing details about their secret marriage, too! We spoke to Amrita about this and matters close to her heart. Excerpts from our conversation...
Anmol and you are known to be very private. In fact, you have always been quite secretive about your personal lives. So what prompted you to open up about your life on social media and how tough was it?
It was during the lockdown in 2020 that Anmol and I decided to do our first ever Insta Live chat together because the world had changed and there was so much grimness in the air that we thought let’s change some rules and spread some love. The response to that chat was the trigger point and we decided to document our love story and recreate those special moments in those very locations where they happened for our social media followers. Now that we have opened the doors, we are not keeping any secrets (laughs!).
You had a secret marriage two years before you announced it to the world...which means you got married in 2014 and spoke about it only in 2016. Why did you keep it under wraps?
Yes, we had a secret wedding in 2014 where we only had immediate family members present. At that point with no social media, the world was different. The news of my wedding could have hampered my career prospects which, luckily, Anmol understood. However, getting married at the right time was also important and hence, Anmol came up with an idea to have a secret marriage and I jumped with excitement at the very thought!
So,the Vivah actress didn’t want to make her own wedding an ostentatious affair...
As the Vivah heroine, I could have got huge mileage out of my own wedding. However, Anmol and I both believe that a wedding is something very personal. Even if it was not a secret vivah, we would have planned a close-knit affair because the fact is that it’s basically your immediate family members, close relatives and friends who are the happiest for you, and are completely in sync with your emotions during such a personal ceremony. We like to keep it simple.
In one of your recent revelations, you said Anmol wanted to get married in 2012 and asked you to quit your career at that time. How did you both work around that?
That’s true. At that point, Anmol could see I was declining some huge movie offers only because I wasn’t comfortable doing kissing scenes and lovemaking sequences on screen. Hence, he thought it was the right time to focus on exploring a beautiful personal life and tying the knot. He did ask me to quit my career and I was completely shattered. However, in a day or two, he told me that in hindsight, he realized that demand was unreasonable and that he was sorry about it.
Your son Veer is over a year old now. Are you looking at returning to acting sometime soon?
Yes, this is just the perfect time. I don’t have those night duties anymore. I am going through many scripts and offers.
Earlier, for an actress, having a child or even being married would impact her career choices. That’s totally changed now. How do you feel about that?
It is social media which has truly turned around things for everyone today. We have validation of our popularity and a following to shut gossip mongers in the industry, who are always waiting to spread the rumour of your downfall! Your army of followers proves to all that you are loved and relevant despite the beautiful engagements that carry on parallelly in life.
You have done movies, some of which were big hits. But when you look back at your career, do you feel you could have added more films to your kitty, by doing things differently?
I regret not doing some movies, but I had no one experienced to advise me back then. However, by and large, the movies that I chose to do have been successful, fresh and relevant.
Where do you see yourself today as an actress, with a variety of content being created for different mediums?
The best part about today’s technology is that we can connect with the audience on our own platforms... isn’t that such a gift? With our love story, we are doing that and this is just the beginning.
I was never the kind of person who tests relationships with different people-Amrita Rao

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; February 13, 2019)
Little did Amrita Rao know that co-hosting a show with a radio jockey would change her life. It was in 2010 that she met RJ Anmol, who anchored a retro-based Bollywood show on radio. With time, they became friends and gradually, their relationship took a serious turn. He proposed to her — first on air and then, in his car near Juhu beach. The actress had always wanted her first relationship to last forever, and her wish was granted, when, after dating for about six years, the couple got married in May 2016. For the first time, Amrita, who recently returned to the big screen with Thackeray, decided to take BT through her romantic journey. Excerpts:As an artiste, you never allowed people into your private space. Be it your relationship or your marriage, you have never spoken about where and how it all began...
I am a huge retro fan, and I had proposed that Anmol and I do a Kishore Kumar show together. That’s when we first met and soon, we realised that we had a common love for old songs. It wasn’t love at first sight for us, but that evening, the first chord was struck. Gradually, we became friends. His positive aura attracted me, but I didn’t realise it for a very long time. We shared a rare comfort with each other. Both of us loved exploring the old-world charm of Mumbai, going on drives and walking in the quaint bylanes near Flora Fountain.
It’s said that marriage changes the course of a relationship. From being a girlfriend to being a wife, the transition must have been drastic...
Luckily, our temperament and likes are very similar. We are naturally compatible, so nothing has changed between us. It started off with us being friends and that is intact even today. When we started living with each other, he had told me that it would be different, and we have to ensure that we never become disrespectful of each other or take each other for granted. Once a mirror is cracked, you can’t mend it, and we didn’t want that. That’s what worked in our favour; we’re always on the same page. We’ve also never let our professional and personal lives cross paths. Keeping them apart makes it all peaceful and happy.
Must say, an actress falling in love with an RJ is indeed an interesting story, and he even proposed to you on air. Pretty much a scene out of a movie, isn’t it?
Yes, he did. He first texted me, saying that I shouldn’t miss the next track on his show. It was my favourite song — Gum hai kisike pyaar mein (Rampur Ka Lakshman) — following which he proposed. I was shocked and when I called him back, we both laughed over it. But deep down, he had expressed what he felt, in the most bold and beautiful manner. In my head, even at that time, he was still my friend who I loved hanging out with. Eventually, he proposed to me again, near Juhu beach. This time, he said, ‘I think we must give this a chance, maybe you are not recognising things.’ I told him, ‘This is the first time I getting into any relationship and it will be serious from this point onwards.’ We’ve never looked back after that. He’s the first and the only man I committed to in a relationship. I had always wished for it to be this way, because I was not the kind of person who would try and test relationships with different people. For me, it was always going to be one relationship for eternity. We spent a lot of time getting to know each other and our families. Gradually, it all came together. My parents loved him in the first 10 minutes of meeting him. His mother once told me, ‘Beta, when we saw Vivah, I had told Anmol, bahu ho to aisi ho. I had never thought ki bahu wohi hogi.’ And then, about six years later, we got married.
Like most Indian couples, are you also facing questions about expanding your family?
Not yet because so far, a lot of people didn’t even know that I was married. Now, the questions may start popping. I have never done something because of any pressure. Anmol is very fond of kids and wants to have a kid, too. We haven’t really made any plans in that direction, yet.
You decided to step out of limelight when you were doing well, professionally. Was there ever a point when you felt that you could have steered the course of your career differently?
Nope! Things are perfect the way they are. Yes, I could have done a lot of films had I compromised on my comfort. I was never comfortable getting intimate on screen or kissing. I could have pinched myself and done it, but I chose to sit back and say ‘no’. Marrying someone not from the industry really helped. We successfully kept everything away from public glare and there couldn’t have been a better time for us to take the plunge. Working in this industry has a lot of pressures, especially for outsiders. Second chances are rare and people pull you down at the first opportunity. I thank God that I have someone, who gives me a new perspective on everything and absorb only the positives in every circumstance.

They say you are not a TV actress unless you've fainted-Amrita Rao

The actress opens up about her small screen experience and why her respect for television stars has grown
Roshni Olivera (BOMBAY TIMES; July 26, 2016)
Your debut show on TV Meri
Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai recently came to an end. How was the experience?
Did you faint at least once like most TV actresses?
I had developed cold feet initially when I was about to dive into the 'daily soap pool' because of the horrifying stories that I had heard of TV actors practically living, eating and sleeping on the set. But Bollywood actors do get many fringe benefits on TV. Like, my contract said 10 hours including hair and make-up, which is luxurious by TV standards. We shot in schedules, the way we do in films because we shot in real locations rather than a fixed set, so the production team also needed a day off for the recce. The concept and my role gave me an incredible rush throughout. They say you are not a TV actress unless you have fainted on set, but I was determined to defy that.
Are you looking at doing more TV shows?
I would love to do fiction shows but only finite ones. I'm convinced that finite fiction is the future of Indian television and you will not have endless shows where the story and characters are minced based on TRPs. Episodes will be shot in advance, making it possible for a director to give his overall finishing touch to it. Actors will not be married to the set as I'm sure weekends will be declared a holiday. The golden phase of fiction shows too will come soon.
There was a time when doing TV was looked as a step down for a film actor...
That changed for India with one game show hosted by Mr Amitabh Bachchan. Today, the film industry is dominating non-fiction shows on TV and soon, they shall also dominate fiction. Also, channels will not just cast you because you are a movie star; it's imperative for an actor to have a connect with the masses. I feel proud that I'm perhaps one of the first actresses from my generation to have explored this genre.
It's said that acting on TV is tougher than acting in films...
A film is just two hours of content, so you, at the most, have two or three emotional scenes that you have to concentrate on. However, on TV, every episode has an emotional high point. You are crying almost every day and then comes a point when you realise that it's not real because in life, we don't cry every day! Tears do sell on a daily medium. That apart, I recall how in a scene I had to fall backwards in a swimming pool and due to time constraints, I had to do it myself despite being a non-swimmer. I loved all these new challenges. My respect for television actors has grown.
On the personal front, you've not been able to go on your honeymoon because of your busy schedule...
That's right (laughs). We have been incredibly occupied with our work schedules, but it will happen soon.
How much has life changed since the time you got married?
A lot has changed most definitely and for the better.

sure about settling down, but the wedding was planned only recently
