Akira crashes; Happy Bhag Jayegi & Rustom heavily affected

AKIRA crashed on its eighth day to add to the flop list of 2016. This was on the cards as occupancy was so low on the weekdays but still it could have worked its way to around 30 crore nett but that is impossible now after the huge crash. The drop in collections is in the 90-95% range on the eighth day and the collections will in the 30 lakh nett range. The final Mumbai number can take it a bit higher but a few lakhs will not change the scenario. The film will stay below JAI GANGAAJAL and just about edge past SARBJIT but that film had better holds because of its North India business.

The Hollywood release DON'T BREATHE has also taken a hit in collections in the second week as it has fallen 60% from day one and those were low levels. The plus for this film is that it has occupancy than last week as the screens have been reduced. The film grossed around 25 lakhs nett taking its total to around 5.50 crore nett.

The new releases BAAR BAAR DEKHO and FREAKY ALI may not have made much impact on day one but they have stopped the run of HAPPY BHAG JAYEGI and RUSTOM. HAPPY BHAG JAYEGI may get up to around to 10 lakh nett on its fourth Friday while RUSTOM will be a couple of lakhs which means it will end at around 125 crore nett.

AKIRA grossed 25 crore nett in week one and the weekdays showed reasonable business helped by the part holiday on Monday but business remains on the lower side. Despite the fair weekday trend the big problem is low occupancy at major multiplexes of around 15% on weekdays which does not give it much chance in the second week as far as multiplex business is concerned. As far as single screens are concerned its hard for these sort of films to survive anyway. JAI GANGAAJAL earlier this year grossed a very similar 24.54 crore nett in week one and went on to do 32.56 crore nett business and that is probably the likely fate of AKIRA also unless the second week can really hold up.

The opening and Saturday business was the killer for the film. For films like this, either you open better and if you don't like AKIRA then you show strong growth on Saturday and AKIRA did neither which sealed its fate.

The low budget Hollywood release DON'T BREATHE which has done very well in its domestic market fared poorly in India with around 4.75 crore nett in week one. It was a limited release but despite that its occupancy was just 25% over the first week at major multiplexes.

AKIRA had a better Sunday as its a holiday today in Maharashtra so the film got the benefit in the evening collections in cities of Maharashtra like Mumbai and Pune. The film grossed around 6.50 crore nett on Sunday taking its weekend total to a little over 16 crore nett. Its unlikely to alter the fate of the film as the growth on which came on Sunday had to come on Saturday. Its a bit like last week"s A FLYING JATT which managed good growth on both Saturday and Sunday but it was not really going anywhere as key centres not performimg. The Sunday trend is decent but looking at the figures in key centres it has just not performed at multiplexes and without them this type of film can't really do much. The single screens have also not done much but a wide release has added to collections a little. Below is first weekend business of AKIRA.
Friday - 4,75,00,000
Saturday - 5,00,00,000
Sunday - 6,25,00,000 apprx
TOTAL - 16,00,00,000

There is a holiday in Maharashtra for Ganesh Chaturthi which may help a little on Monday but eventually the film has not really found appreciation with its target audience and that will tell in the collections.
---------------
AKIRA had a fair hold on Monday as it fell around 40-45% from day one and grossed around 2.75 crore nett.. There was a holiday in Maharashtra which helped collections on Monday and due to the last two days the Mumbai circuit is faring best for the film. The film is following the same path of another heroine orientated film earlier this year JAI GANGAAJAL. Not only are both films heroine orientated and almost ditto at the box office for the first four days but they both had directors (Prakash Kha and Anurag Kashyap) as the other main actors after the heroines. They also have similar costs. JAI GANGAAJAL did final business of 32.50 crore nett apprx. Below is first weekend business of AKIRA.
Friday - 4,75,00,000
Saturday - 5,00,00,000
Sunday - 6,25,00,000
Monday - 2,75,00,000 apprx
TOTAL - 18,75,00,000

The first week business of the film should be in the 25 crore nett region. The Overseas business of the film is so so and in US/Canada the film had to be released under a different name NAAM HAI AKIRA probably due to copyright issues. The film grossed $165,000 there over a four day weekend.

AKIRA had a poor opening day of around 4.25 crore nett. There was slight improvement as the day progressed as the morning shows suggested a total more close to 3 crore nett. Though the collections were better in the evening, its not the sort of jump which signals huge growth over the weekend. Compared to the other films driven by female leads this year, it is better than FITOOR, SARBJIT and HAPPY BHAG JAYEGI but the numbers are below NEERJA (4.62 cr) and JAI GANGAAJAL (4.48 cr) and the openings of NEERJA and JAI GANGAAJAL were not good either though the former eventually did well in metros and a further boost through tax exemptions. The film may have action but single screens are poor as the film was lacking entertainment and music from the theatrical trailer.

Basically its an action drama which is depending solely on multiplex business and that's a big ask after this sort of initial as the genre very rarely shows the sort of growth needed by AKIRA. Also the film has not performed too well in markets which tend to show the most growth on Saturday.

There were a few other Hindi releases YEA TOH TWO MUCH HO GAYAA, DARK CHOCOLATE, ISLAND CITY, SUNSHINE MUSIC TOURS AND TRAVELS and UNFORMUNG - THE TRANSFORMATION had hardly any collections and all were under the 10 lakhs nett mark even though some of these films managed to get 2-3 screenings at many multiplexes.
