This year, Mohit Raina’s birthday carries an extra layer of significance as he embraces the joy of spending it with his wife, Aditi Sharma, and daughter for the first time. The actor, known for his role in Devon ke Dev Mahadev, shares that this conscious decision was prompted by a desire to savour the small yet precious moments of life.
“For the first time, I’ll be celebrating my birthday not only with my [six-month-old] daughter but also with my wife. Over the past three years, circumstances prevented us from coming together on this day. Whether it was the pandemic, work commitments, or other engagements, I missed celebrating with Aditi. This year, I deliberately chose to take time off to be with family and cherish these moments,” says Raina, who married Sharma in December 2021.
As he turns 42 today, the actor discusses the profound joy of being present to see his daughter grow up: “Friends told me how quickly kids grow up. I didn’t want to miss these early moments of fatherhood, so I decided to prioritize family. I was uncertain about taking a break, but I’m content with my decision. Being there to see her when I wake up and before I go to sleep is invaluable.”
While highlighting his preference for intimate celebrations, he shares, “I’m not inclined towards extravagant parties or social gatherings, as I’m an introvert. I attend events when necessary.”
Revealing the most cherished birthday gift he has received, Raina shares a poignant anecdote about a letter left behind by his father before his passing: “The letter is a treasure trove of blessings and guidance, containing life lessons and rules to follow. It’s akin to a gift from the divine. During moments of doubt or difficulty, I turn to the letter for solace and guidance.”

Mohit Raina, who is a fan of slice-of-life romantic stories, on finally adding one to his résumé with Ishq-E-Nadaan
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; July 18, 2023)
Don’t go by the roles he does on screen. Off screen, Mohit Raina is a fan of romantic dramas, and counts Life in a Metro (2007) among the finest love stories made in Bollywood. So, when Ishq-E-Nadaan was offered to him, the actor jumped at the opportunity of adding a romantic film to his resume. In conversation with mid-day, Raina talks about how the JioCinema offering’s simple yet heartfelt story appealed to the romantic in him.
Edited excerpts from the interview.
Was it a conscious decision to do a romantic drama?
I wanted to do a romantic show for a long time. When I started working in television, I was never approached for romantic shows. In digital entertainment, I only did one series that had tinges of romance. I was waiting for something like Ishq-E-Nadaan. It’s a beautiful, light-hearted love story that talks about human relationships. Any actor would have grabbed this opportunity.
How did the script come to you?
When Avishek [Ghosh, director] narrated the script to me, in my head, I was on board already. Almost 15 minutes into it, I was thinking about how I would arrange my dates and was doing [mental] calculations because I loved the script.
Over time, has any love story—be it in movies or web series—resonated with you?
For me, Life In A Metro [2007] was one such movie. I liked the concept of [telling stories of] people in one city and how their stories connected despite being from different walks of life. After that, many people tried to emulate it, but it wasn’t accepted. I wanted to do something like that for a long time. Now, Anurag Basu is coming with a sequel to it.
At a time when love is all about right and left swipes, do you think people connect with old-school romance?
I don’t think it is possible today. Now, you know everything about the other person by looking at their social media profile. But back in the day, you’d wait for the person to go out, then see what flavour of ice-cream they are having. Obviously life is all about change. That was old-school charm, but I don’t think today’s generation understands that.
What is the most romantic thing you’ve ever done?
I got married last year. For my wife’s [Aditi Sharma] birthday, I collected all the photographs that showed our journey—how we met and started going out—and made a collage. I put it on the walls with decorations to surprise her. She was under the impression that we might only go out for dinner. So, this took her by surprise.
Tell us your love story?
We met through a common friend. There were no balloons or flowers, nothing lavish. My wife is definitely more romantic than me.
Why haven’t we seen you doing more work?
I prefer doing less but quality work, which makes my soul happy. I want to satisfy the hunger of the actor inside me. If I wanted, I could do a lot more work and earn more money, which is what everyone has been advising me to do, but I don’t see myself doing that. If I take on a role for the sake of it or do something that I don’t want to do, it will show. I won’t be able to do justice to it.
Do you feel you are typecast?
There is scope for more diversity. Sometimes, the scripts coming my way are [similar]. I would like to experiment more, which is not happening.
What’s next on your plate?
I have completed the second season of Mumbai Diaries 26/11. We shot it last year.

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; December 21, 2022)
The industry was abuzz with news of tension in Mohit Raina’s marriage. The actor, best known for his portrayal of Mahadev in the TV show Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev, tied the knot with Aditi Sharma in an intimate ceremony in Rajasthan in December last year.
Recently, he deleted almost all their pictures together from his Instagram account, including their wedding photos. This has given rise to speculation that their marriage is in trouble. Mohit has always been tight-lipped about his personal life, and the only thing he revealed about his relationship with Aditi is that he met her through common friends.
After these rumours surfaced, we tried reaching out to Mohit. The actor replied to our message, saying, “What rubbish. These rumours are baseless! I am in Himachal Pradesh right now celebrating our first (wedding) anniversary.”
He also shared a scenic picture from the mountains. On the work front, Mohit made the transition from TV to films with Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019) and has been busy with web series over the past couple of years.

Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 11, 2020)
Ganesh Chaturthi is just 11 days away, but the ongoing pandemic has put a damper on the 10-day revelry this year. With the government banning all public gatherings, the festival will be limited to a family affair. However, TV is doing its bit to give Bappa a rapturous welcome, virtually. Star Plus kickstarted celebrations over the weekend at Film City Studios. Star Parivaar Ganeshotsav 2020 will be aired during the festival week.
Sonu Sood, who has become a real hero during the Coronavirus-triggered lockdown, by helping thousands of migrants from across the country and even abroad get back to their homes, is going to host the show. The actor, who shares a special bond with Ganesh, will welcome him with a puja. “There won’t be many Ganpati pandals this year. So, this is the best way to welcome the Lord,” says Sonu, who celebrated the festival for the first time when he had just moved to Mumbai and didn’t know how to serve Ganesha. “I learnt and now we have developed such a bond that he comes to my home every year. He has answered all my prayers and shown me a new path to follow every year.”
Sonu plans his shoots around the 10-day celebrations in a way that he can spend maximum time with Bappa. “My in-laws come to my place during the festival and these 10 days of family time is something we look forward to every year,” he says, insisting that it was Ganesh who gave him the power to help so many people during this crisis. “I have done many movies, but this is the best role I got to play. I want Bappa to help all the people who have suffered during the pandemic and I am sure he will listen to my prayers and make everything right.”
TV actors Surbhi Jyoti and Siddharth Nigam will perform on “Sukhkarta Dukhharta” on the show while Divyanka Tripathi, who bid goodbye to the channel in December last year when her long-running show Yeh Hai Mohabbatein went off the air, returns with a Lavani performance. Shivangi Joshi from Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Rupali Ganguly from Anupamaa and Aditi Sharma from Yehh Jadu Hai Jinn Ka! will send video messages seeking Bappa’s blessings.
Shilpa Shetty will pay tribute to the frontline workers, with a medley of songs, from Lagaan’s “Chale Chalo” and Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl’s “Jazba” to “Shambhu Sutaya” from ABCD - Any Body Can Dance and “Nainowale Ne” from Padmaavat. Harshad Chopda, who featured with Sushant Singh Rajput in the 2008 show, Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, will remember the late actor by shaking a leg to his popular songs.

Concluding her year-long tribute to father Kaifi Azmi with the screening of brother Baba's film, Shabana remembers the legendary poet
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; January 12, 2020)
On January 14, 2019, which marked the birth centenary of Kaifi Azmi, commenced a year-long tribute to the legendary poet and lyricist. After an array of mushairas, plays and seminars, the tribute will come to a close on January 14 this year with the screening of Kaifi's son, Baba Azmi's first directorial effort, the Hindi feature film, Mee Raqsam (I Dance).
The film that explores the relationship shared by a father and his daughter also features Naseeruddin Shah in a special role. It was shot in Kaifi's hometown Mijwan, near Azamgarh. Baba tells mid-day, "My father had asked me if it would be possible to shoot a film in Mijwan. Those words stayed with me. It's emotional for me as this is my tribute to him."
Lyricist Javed Akhtar, husband of Kaifi's actor-daughter Shabana Azmi, was the brain behind the celebration. Akhtar says. "So many people came together to participate and contribute [to this tribute]. Shabana and I recited his poetries, while Shankar Mahadevan sang them and Ustad Zakir Hussain interpreted them on the tabla. A documentary [Kafinama] was made by Sumantra Ghoshal. So, it has been an interesting year."
Shabana, who has been overseeing the developments, says, "With satisfaction and gratitude, what started off as a family tribute, was soon embraced by poetry lovers. We had over 48 celebrations during the year, including lit-festivals in UK, USA, Europe, and India. Mee Raqsam is about a Muslim tailor in Mijwan, and his daughter, who wants to learn Bharatnatyam. This is the ultimate tribute to Kaifi, who loved his village. The role of the teenager will be played by Aditi Sharma. She is a resident of the village and the daughter of a former attendant of abba [Kaifi Azmi]. I get gooseflesh when I think how pleased abba would be."

After Vishal Bhardwaj, now his son Aasmaan makes a film on a story by Ruskin Bond

Twenty-year-old Aasmaan’s third short film is an adaptation of the writer’s short story, The Thief
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 16, 2016)
Eleven years after Vishal Bhardwaj’s Blue Umbrella, based on Ruskin Bond’s 1980 novel of the same name came out, the writer-filmmaker-composer’s son Aasmaan’s third short film, an adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s story, The Thief, is ready to take wings.
A record 202 films, including 131 fiction features and 33 documentaries, were submitted to the Viewing Room which serves as a mentoring platform for films-in-progress to find sales agents, film festivals, buyers, distributors and financing.
Aasmaan, currently a screenwriting student at the School of Visual Arts in New York, has already completed two short films – The Identities, featuring Kalki Koechlin, Vivaan Shah and Harish Khanna which released in 2013, and Murder On The Deccan Express, featuring Vivaan Shah and Aneesha Joshi, which released in 2015.
Aasmaan believes that his prolific father who has co-produced the film along with singer-wife Rekha and co-written it with him and Aditya Nimbalkar has been a crucial part of his cinematic journey. “It is because of him that I am so passionate about filmmaking. I want to be more like him. I wanted to join the army before but my father’s decision to make Makdee exposed me to this world,” the youngster signs off.
