"Judge for yourself": Saiyaara writer Sankalp Sadanah responds to plagiarism claims

Mohit Suri’s romantic drama Saiyaara has been enjoying a dream run at the box office, having crossed Rs. 500 crore globally.
While it received an outpouring of love, controversy has emerged after a section of viewers alleged that the plot was lifted from the Korean romantic drama, A Moment to Remember (2004).
Now, the film’s writer, Sankalp Sadanah has addressed the comparisons, dismissing the claims. “So much has already been said. All I can say is — the Korean film is out there, and so is Saiyaara. Watch both and judge for yourself. You’ll be able to tell whether it’s inspired, a copy, or an original,” he said during a recent conversation with trade analyst Komal Nahta.
He also shared that Saiyaara was born from a casual meeting with Mohit in Mumbai. “There was talk of a sequel to another project — Aashiqui 3 to be precise. As I was leaving, Mohit asked me to stay and listen to something. He then asked if it was worth building into a film,” Sankalp recalled.
Interestingly, A Moment to Remember is itself a Korean adaptation of the 2001 Japanese TV drama Kimi ga Boku wo Wasuretemo. Each of these three projects follows the story of a man who falls in love with a woman diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

In the wake of the Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni lawsuit and very public online smear campaign, we ask Bollywood publicists, managers, entertainment editors and trade gurus about just how much can a smear campaign affect a celebrity’s social currency

It all started with conspiracy theories as to why Hollywood actors and stars of the 2024 movies, It Ends with Us, Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, were unable to get along during the shoot of the said movie. “Creative disagreement” was the popular term used for it, but what lay underneath was slander, and an effort to put down the other. Soon, social media was rife with conspiracy theories—some experts reading body language of the two stars—some just pondering on why they were both not seen together during promotions of the movie. It was declared: the two couldn’t stand each other.
There was some truth to the fire, as in the past two week, both Lively and Baldoni have filed lawsuits against each other. Lively’s account, where she accuses Baldoni of sexual harassment, was also reported in the New York Times by Megan Twohey (who has reported on the Harvey Weinstein case) with the headline: “We Can Bury Anyone: Inside A Hollywood Smear Machine”. What took centrestage: the use of social media and the Internet to create a narrative (true or not) of the other.
But how is Bollywood viewing this? A celebrity manager, on condition of anonymity, says the best way to attack a star is to attack their “image”. “They care for nothing as much as their image. And creative disagreements and celebrity fall-outs are rampant in this industry. For instance, Salman Khan walked out of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film after announcing it. Of course, that couldn’t have been pleasant. But what separates that from the Baldoni-Lively case is that neither party went out of their way to pull the other one down. A classic case of a Bollywood smear campaign is what happened to Kangana.”
Actress Kangana Ranaut has publicly admitted to being at the receiving end of the industry’s inability to stomach her. In 2021, she said, “Just last week, I lost more than five lakh followers on Instagram. They gang up on you, boycott you, and if that leaves you happy and content, they ruin your image and brand. That’s how they killed Sushant [Singh Rajput]. That’s how they harass outsiders who don’t need them for work. There are paid smear campaigns happening on Instagram as well… Many derogatory memes and fake information about me are spread. Instagram is also paid as my followers numbers automatically drop, fans who unfollow don’t even realize it... There is a proper investment of troll army, creative budget to make memes, to write lies to spread smear campaigns, movie mafia + political mafia + jaded actors who are rejected lovers, you are jealous of even a fruit bowl...”
These observations were following an incident when Ranaut posted a picture of herself having breakfast, and got trolled.
A former publicist of Ranaut’s, who worked with her for a year, told us, “This whole impression that Kangana is difficult and a loose cannon, has been created. She is very professional and believes in doing her work and going home. She has a certain political leaning and believes in it strongly, but who isn’t leaning towards the establishment today. Why should she be vilified? Then it all boils down to—is she good at her work? Oh yes, she is. It’s a good question to ask then—why is she not getting films? Some part of the answer is that she has managed to offend her directors. She has wanted creative control and I personally believe, directors allow men the creative control, when women ask for it, there’s an issue. There has been a systematic smear campaign on Kangana—where videos of her using a fake horse have been leaked when every actor does that for period films. Money has been spent on bringing her down. If one wishes to study a smear campaign, they should go through Kangana’s career post 2015.”
The problem happens when a one-off dispute shifts from professional disagreements to personal attacks, with media outlets amplifying unverified claims from anonymous insiders. This pattern is a textbook example of how celebrity feuds are orchestrated and sustained in the digital age. Earlier this week, a slanderous article on Triptii Dimri appeared on a website, which claimed that she was removed from Aashiqui 3 because makers weren’t comfortable with her bold avatar in Animal. In Triptii’s case, the story may be planted by professional rivals who want to cost her an opportunity/or envious of the fact that she is currently shooting for Vishal Bhardwaj’s film with Shahid Kapoor.
But it could be a reach to say this only happens to the women in the industry. An industry veteran pointed out that in 2014, Aamir Khan met Mumbai Police to complain about “false and malicious messages” that were being circulated in social networking sites Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to damage his image and reputation of his issue-based show Satyamev Jayate.
“Aamir Khan complained to us about some objectionable messages getting circulated (against him),” a police official had told the press then.
But how do the smear campaigns work, and more importantly, do they succeed in today’s media landscape? Let’s take a closer look at Bollywood’s modus operandi.
Tushar Joshi, entertainment editor of India Today, tells us, “These smear campaigns are age-old in the industry. Sometimes they are direct and sometimes they are proxy. But what is going on in Hollywood is something actors in Bollywood have faced. These campaigns happen via publicists, production houses, actors and colleagues and friends who have agendas different from their rivals. Maybe emails, voice calls haven’t been made public. They might have been exchanged in private to sway the minds of the opinion makers. The only difference is most of what happens in Bollywood happens behind closed doors. With the Baldoni-Lively case out in the open now, new norms are being set.”
Smear campaigns are rarely explicit. They are carefully orchestrated efforts that exploit the vulnerabilities of digital ecosystems. A lot of the battle has moved to Redditt.
In an email interview, the Reddit account, Bollywood, tells us, “We frequently get requests to post leaks and we do so. So far, we haven’t got commercial deals but it’s only a matter of time until we get there. We list it under unverified goss. We have noticed a lot of gossip on Kartik Aaryan, Akshay Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and the things that we get told are juicy. Clearly, someone wants to feed these stories to the public. The tabloids have stopped carrying gossip, so we have to. A post can look organic, but it’s often the first step in a much-larger campaign.”
A Bollywood publicist tells us, “Earlier, the approach was subtle. Journalists were given insider tidbits—sometimes, stories were planted by mentioning them in passing. The goal is to create a seed of doubt in their audience’s mind. But now, it has become all about money. Influencers with followers ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 are often paid to post seemingly neutral content that’s actually part of a coordinated campaign. A simple Instagram story about a '“troubling blind item' can snowball into a full-blown scandal.”
“Smear campaigns work because they tap into our collective love for drama. Controversy sells, and people are quick to believe what aligns with their existing biases. It’s classic voyeurism,” says a Bollywood podcaster. But at the same time, a smear campaign has little correlation to a film. There is plenty of hate against Ranbir Kapoor but his film, Animal, made nearly Rs 1,000 crores.
Veteran director Anurag Kashyap had said before that a smear campaign might work for a weekend, but it can’t sustain itself if the audience connects with the work of an actor. At the end of the day, content is king.
In the end, none of the bitterness matters, says trade analyst Taran Adarsh. “The goal is that a film must work. Smear campaigns pique curiosity and fuels the news cycle. But the audience wants a movie, they want to be entertained. Often films have gone through political controversies and personal issues and have powered through because the film is good. Also none of this affects an actor’s brand value. It is a he said/she said story until someone goes to the cinema hall and says ‘oh what a film’. I have to quote a story here. B R Chopra and Madhubala went into a famous trial over a film. She was replaced by Vyjayanthimala and the film did very well despite this controversy. Collections remained unaffected. I had asked Chopra sa’ab, ‘Aapko laga nahi negativity aajayegi’ and he had said, ‘Kaam karma hota hai. Acha kaam kariye and the audience will reward you’. The interpersonal dynamics may be shaken, but cinema will last forever.”

Content creator and dancer Imanvi Esmail is likely to star alongside Kartik Aaryan in director Anurag Basu’s love saga after the film with Triptii Dimri is deferred

Mid-day had previously reported that Aashiqui 3, starring Kartik Aaryan and Triptii Dimri had been indefinitely postponed, and director Anurag Basu was set to make a fresh romance saga featuring Aaryan along with a new leading lady (A love drama, indeed, January 14). It appears that the makers’ search has ended in Imanvi Esmail, a content creator who is already working with producer Bhushan Kumar on her debut movie alongside Prabhas.
A source says that Kumar, the co-producer of the film starring Prabhas, has initiated a discussion with the primary producers to secure permissions to cast Esmail.
“Imanvi has signed an agreement stating that she wouldn’t commit to any new film until Prabhas’ movie is released. Bhushan is talking to them to see if she can be cast in Kartik’s film because that will hit the screens after Prabhas’ movie. If the teams are unable to negotiate, the makers may look at other options,” says the insider.
Given that there is no chatter of bad blood between the makers and Dimri, we ask if the Animal (2023) actor was considered for the new film alongside Aaryan.
“Triptii is busy for six months with Vishal Bhardwaj’s film, so the makers had to look at other options. Also, the requirement of the film is a fresh face. A lot depends on the look test and the chemistry between the actors. Another big contender for the role is Sara Ali Khan, who Anurag has just worked with in Metro… In Dino. If the conversation with Imanvi falls through, the makers will approach Sara. The final calls on the film’s casting will be taken by the end of this month.”
Imanvi will make her debut with Prabhas in a film directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, who previously helmed the critically acclaimed Sita Ramam (2022). The aspiring actor, who grew up in the USA, credits her mother for introducing her to iconic Bollywood actresses like Rekha, Madhuri Dixit, and Vyjayanthimala, whose classical movements and expressive choreography inspired her to pursue dancing.
Her passion for dance helped her amass an audience of 903K on Instagram and 1.8 million on YouTube. In 2020, her choreography on Ramta jogi (Taal, 1999) went viral, earning her widespread recognition. Another viral hit came in 2023, when her rendition of Tum tum caught the attention of filmmakers. Apart from Prabhas and Esmail, the film also features Mithun Chakraborty and Jaya Prada in pivotal roles. mid-day reached out to Basu to confirm the developments, but he remained unavailable till press time.

A love story produced by Bhushan Kumar, directed by Anurag Basu, and starring Kartik Aaryan was initially touted as Aashiqui 3. Announced in September 2022, the buzz around the film indicated it would be a sequel to the iconic Aashiqui franchise, known for its romantic storyline and blockbuster music. However, the project has since been surrounded by confusion and controversy.
In March 2024, Bhushan Kumar announced that he would be producing the film solo. It was allegedly renamed Tu Aashiqui Hai. But reports in November indicated that Aaryan was eager to have it as part of the Aashiqui franchise. On Wednesday, the controversy around the movie reached new heights when reports surfaced claiming that actor Triptii Dimri had been dropped from the film, which was still thought to be Aashiqui 3.

Rumours suggested that Dimri’s bold and sensual image, showcased in films such as Animal and Bad Newzz, led producers to reconsider her casting and seek a different actor for the role originally intended for her. The filmmakers reportedly wanted a “pure, innocent” face for the role, and Dimri’s more mature portrayal in recent projects might not have aligned with their vision.
The official stance from either side has not been clarified. But we speak to sources from all parties involved to dig deeper.
A source close to Dimri strongly denies all the claims circulating online, saying: “The reports and reasons circulating are not true at all. The film is not in development, and any discussion regarding Triptii’s involvement is fabricated. There is no ongoing conversation about the film at all.” When asked if there was another reason behind her exit, another source adds, “These rumours are likely being spread by someone associated with the film, possibly to ensure Triptii’s removal from the film.”
Triptii or Sharvari?
Confirming that ‘Aashiqui 3’ is currently postponed, a production source shared, “The team of Anurag Basu and Kartik Aaryan is working on another love story, which will begin filming either this month or the next. The search for the female lead is still underway.”
Some reports suggested that actor Sharvari was in the race to play the female lead instead of Dimri. However, the source added, “Triptii Dimri is not part of this project, nor is Sharvari. As of now, Sharvari is not part of any T-Series project.”
Mukesh Bhatt on Aashiqui rights
Meanwhile, veteran producer Mukesh Bhatt, the original creator of the Aashiqui franchise, has made it clear that T-Series cannot move forward with the series without his approval. “The court has given the verdict in our favour, that speaks enough. As far as I am concerned, Aashiqui 3 is in a deadlock. He (Bhushan Kumar) cannot make it without me, and I don’t want to make it with that man. There is no development whatsoever,” Bhatt said emphasizing his control over the franchise. In a legal move in September last year, the Delhi HC restrained T-Series from using the Aashiqui title (which also includes titles Tu Hi Aashiqui or Tu Hi Aashiqui Hai for an upcoming film) without Bhatt’s consent.

Success teaches you many things. It looks like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’s recent success has taught Kartik Aaryan that leading a franchise is a smart tactic to connect with the audience, a lesson he is applying to his next. mid-day has learnt that the actor is keen that his romantic drama—which was initially planned as Aashiqui 3, but then reimagined as a stand-alone film—be restored under the Aashiqui franchise.
A lot has happened on the Aashiqui front since the third instalment was announced in 2022. At the time, Anurag Basu was to direct the Aaryan-led love story, with Bhushan Kumar and Mukesh Bhatt producing it. However, a tussle began between the producers over the franchise’s rights. Finally, this March, the T-Series head honcho announced that he alone was backing the Aaryan-Basu project, which was rechristened Tu Aashiqui Hai and was no longer a part of the Aashiqui franchise.
Now, Aaryan has apparently introduced a plot twist. A source reveals, “The success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and 3 has confirmed Kartik’s belief in the power of franchises. He has suggested to Bhushan that he initiate talks with Mukesh Bhatt to acquire the title. Kartik is certain that building the love story under the Aashiqui franchise will give it a push.”
In 1990, Aashiqui made Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal overnight stars. Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor recreated the magic with Aashiqui 2 (2013), produced by T-Series and Bhatt’s Vishesh Films. Now, with Aaryan eager to lead the franchise, the source says that Kumar is figuring out the right way to take the matter forward with Bhatt. It’s one of the reasons the shoot of the movie, also starring Triptii Dimri, has been pushed to next year.
“Anurag is anyway busy with the re-shoot of Metro… In Dino. With this new development, the project will only roll sometime next year. Kartik wants clarity on all aspects before he faces the camera,” says the insider.
Franchises have been money-spinners this year, be it Stree 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 or Singham Again. Almost every star has a franchise film in their line-up—from Shah Rukh Khan having Pathaan 2 to Ranbir Kapoor greenlighting Animal Park. It only makes sense for Aaryan to join the bandwagon.
Another source notes, “He will soon begin shooting Pati Patni Aur Woh 2. He is also keen to have a sequel to Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety [2018].”

There has been much interest around Aashiqui 3 ever since filmmaker Anurag Basu and actor Kartik Aaryan announced it last year. Now, word on the street is that for the franchise’s third instalment, the makers are planning to revisit Baseraa (1981), which starred Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee and Rekha.
Baseraa, based on a Marathi novel by Leela Phansalkar and written by Gulzar, told the story of a middle-aged married couple whose lives turn upside down when the husband’s first wife returns home from a mental institution after over a decade.
A source close to the development reveals, “The third instalment has been tentatively titled Tu Aashiqui Hai. The team was looking for a narrative with a powerful love story at the core. In Baseraa, they appear to have found a match. The scripting has begun, and the material will be adapted to the current times.”
The casting for primary characters is underway. The source adds, “Tripti Dimrii is one of the female leads opposite Kartik. The makers are yet to lock the third actor.” The director apparently plans to roll the film in the second half of 2024.
Right at the time of going to press, Basu, on his part, for now, however denied the buzz.

Kartik Aaryan has emerged as the torchbearer for the next generation of Bollywood actors, not only because his films have been successful blockbusters but also because he’s a formidable name in the world of brand endorsements.
Aaryan, who debuted on the ‘Forbes India Celebrity 100 list’ in 2019, today boasts of an impressive portfolio of brand associations that transcend international boundaries.
Aaryan entered the industry as an outsider, but with his boyish charm, relatability and effervescent energy, has climbed up the pedestal to become a favourite among corporates.

While collaborating with a celebrity or influencer, the first metric a brand looks at is the ‘reach’ they have and what kind of a target audience follows them,” Chatterjee added.

In September 2023, an Arijit Singh number, touted to be a leaked song of Aashiqui 3, was doing the rounds online. The claim was not only quickly busted by social media users, but also made producer Mukesh Bhatt issue a public notice stating that Vishesh Films was the joint owner of the movie’s intellectual property rights [If he doesn’t like the script, we will make it with another director, Oct 7]. Given the drama that has preceded the making of Aashiqui 3’s album, it isn’t surprising that composer Pritam is working towards keeping the project closely guarded.
Rumours suggest that the composer is expected to kick off work on the film’s music this month. A source reveals, “Usually, Pritam has an elaborate team that works with him, and he values every opinion. He believes that inputs make a song better. But on this project, he has decided to keep it on the down-low. At any given point, not more than 15 people will have access to the material composed, thus minimizing the chances of a leak.”
Director Anurag Basu and leading man Kartik Aaryan were roped in right at the start for the romantic musical. The source adds, “The studio and producers are expected to regroup this month, and will finalize the entire cast. The makers plan to take the project on floors in the next six to eight months.”

Over 19 years since the inception of Koffee with Karan, host Karan Johar has been giving audiences a peek into the lives of their favourite celebrities. The eighth season of the popular chat show continues to keep viewers hooked with the guests’ frank speak on the couch. The latest episode of the Disney+ Hotstar show sees Aditya Roy Kapur and Arjun Kapoor speak candidly on several subjects of their lives.
Considering that Kapur remains most memorable for his performance as Rahul Jaykar in Aashiqui 2, Johar asked him about Kartik Aaryan being cast in the third instalment of the musical romance, in the latest episode.
“I think he is the perfect person to take the baton forward,” Kapur promptly replied, without any hint of insecurity. He explained, “There was no chance I could be in this, because in the second part my character went for a long swim, from which he is not returning.”
At that, Kapoor couldn’t help quipping, “Then he became the night manager after that,” alluding to Kapur’s hit series that also impressed Hollywood actor Tom Hiddleston, who essayed the titular role in the original international show.

Since its announcement last year, Aashiqui 3 continues to be one of the most anticipated Bollywood films. But along with the buzz comes intense speculation around the romantic drama, which will be led by Kartik Aaryan and helmed by Anurag Basu. It was recently reported that the musical would go into production in January 2024. Co-producer Mukesh Bhatt, however, points out that the team has yet to begin scripting.
“Anurag is currently busy with another film. After he gets free and writes a script, we’ll see whether we like it. If we do, we will go ahead with it. Similarly, Kartik has to like the script. Then we will decide on the music. We want to do Aashiqui 3 in the right manner,” he says.

Last month, an Arijit Singh number, which was doing the rounds of social media, was touted to be a leaked song from the soundtrack of Aashiqui 3. The claim was found to be baseless soon after. The incident was probably the reason why producer Mukesh Bhatt issued a public notice in a trade magazine last week, stating that Vishesh Films is “the producer and joint rightful owner of the intellectual property rights and derivative rights” associated with the popular film franchise. The notice further stated that any communication related to the franchise made without the production house’s involvement would be considered fraudulent and may result in legal ramifications.
While Bhatt understands the anticipation around Kartik Aaryan-led Aashiqui 3, he is seeing red at the song fiasco. He says, “No song has been composed yet. How can it be leaked? It was important to issue the public notice as I am the copyright holder and the creative fountainhead of the Aashiqui franchise.”
The producer is also miffed at the rumours surrounding the casting of Anurag Basu’s directorial venture. Several names—from Deepika Padukone to Katrina Kaif, from Fatima Sana Shaikh to Akanksha Sharma—have been thrown around as the love story’s female lead. “This is all rubbish,” asserts Bhatt.
“We will introduce a new [actor]. These [talent] agencies are throwing names of actresses as they want to promote their talent, but I don’t want my franchise to be a part of somebody else’s agenda.”
There was talk that Aashiqui 3 would roll by the year-end. However, Bhatt dismisses the idea, explaining that the script has yet to be finalized.
“Anurag is busy with Metro… In Dino. I want to be completely convinced about the script before we start anything.” It’s also heard that Basu may focus on the Kishore Kumar biopic with Ranbir Kapoor next year.
The Aashiqui franchise began in 1990, its success making Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal overnight stars. Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor repeated the magic in 2013 with Aashiqui 2. Naturally then, expectations are high from the third instalment.
“As of now, we have Kartik on board as the male lead. Everything is tentative till I get a script from Anurag. If it doesn’t come from him or if he doesn’t like the script, we can make it with some other director. Similarly, for some reason, if Kartik feels he doesn’t suit the character, he has the right to choose to walk out. Aashiqui and Aashiqui 2 didn’t depend on any external forces or star cast. We created stars with the films.”

Denying any tiff with producer Bhushan Kumar and his company, the 71-year-old adds, “The creative [aspect] is my domain. Bhushan was there for parts one and two, so how can he not be a part of the third film?”

The 32-year-old partnership, formed in 1990 with Aashiqui, between T-Series and Vishesh Films, continues with their new project, Aashiqui 3. Producers Mukesh Bhatt and Bhushan Kumar are set to reunite for the much anticipated third instalment of the Aashiqui franchise with director Anurag Basu. The music will be scored by Pritam and the film will star Kartik Aaryan in the lead. The team began the collaboration on a positive and spiritual note by seeking Lord Ganesha’s blessings during Ganeshotsav.
The Aashiqui franchise that revolved around love and relationships with some great music has remained in the hearts of the audience to date. Mukesh Bhatt said, “On the evening of August 16, 1990, a day before Aashiqui’s release, Gulshan ji (Gulshan Kumar) and I were very nervous, but the next day records were broken and history was created. Today with Bhushan, Pritam, Anurag and the heart-throb of the nation, Kartik, I assure everyone that Aashiqui 3 will celebrate love like never before.”

Bhushan Kumar gears up to take father’s legacy ahead with new instalments of Aashiqui, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin

On July 23, 1990, Gulshan Kumar’s romance musical Aashiqui opened in theatres, unveiling debutants Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal whose faces, through the promotions, had been hidden behind a jacket. They became overnight stars and the film is still remembered for Nadeem-Shravan’s chartbusting score.A sequel followed in 2013, with the original director, Mahesh Bhatt, joining hands with Gulshan Kumar’s son Bhushan to produce it. Bhatt’s nephew Mohit Suri was at the helm and Aashiqui 2 relaunched the careers of Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur.
There have been talks of Aashiqui 3 ever since. Bhatt, who was to produce the film with Bhushan, confirmed to Mirror (March 16, 2016) that the franchise was returning. He admitted that his daughter Alia and her then-beau Sidharth Malhotra had been approached, but added that they hadn’t signed the contract.
A month later (April 11), Sidharth informed that scripting was in progress and the film would be up and running by the next year. “Aashiqui 3 has lots of angst, love and music… Mohit wants me to sing. Maybe Alia and I can sing a duet, that’d be a first for an actor and an actress who debuted together,” he’d laughed.However, soon after, there were rumours that Alia had lost interest in the project. In August, 2017, she took to Twitter to rubbish them, describing Aashiqui as a “special brand” and saying working with her father for the first time was “equally special”.
Three years on, Mirror has learnt that discussions on Part 3 are underway. “Aashiqui is special for Bhushan as it’s among the most successful romantic franchises. Like the earlier two films, this one too will be a musical, with an intense love story in its backdrop,” revealed a source.
That’s not all. The producer and his team also want to take forward another Mahesh Bhatt directorial, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin. The 1991 romcom, featuring Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt, was a box-office success, and like Aashiqui, had unforgettable music. “It’s another simplistic musical love story, a genre that has taken a backseat. Both films will take off when things get back to normal,” the source said.Bhushan confirmed the news to Mirror, saying, “Yes, Aashiqui and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin are great franchises to take forward. Both films were big hits back in the day and it’s a great responsibility to carry my father’s legacy forward.”

You often explore the dark side of human personality. Why the fascination?I would call it real, not dark. It’s a part of life and there are interesting stories in this zone which no one else is telling.
But doesn’t it take a toll on you as a person?
I have been on a film set since I was 17, I love the writing process. Every film takes a toll on you but it’s still essential to place yourself in the story. Take Kabir Singh, for instance. Sandeep Vanga was in a medical college and a student in a medical college could have anger management issues.
Talking of Kabir Singh, shouldn’t a filmmaker have a social responsibility too?
We do have the right to freedom of speech. And Sandeep Vanga was just saying people like Kabir Singh exist. Even I was accused of advocating alcoholism in Aashiqui 2, though I don’t socially endorse that.
Is Aashiqui 3 happening?
Not at the moment, but I’m in talks with Mukesh Bhatt for another film. Things happen when they are meant to. Like for my next, Ek Villain 2, we couldn’t think of an actor but after Malang, I felt Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) was apt for this character. It’s horrible to have someone on board, who is not right for a role.
Buzz is, there’s a film with Farhan Akhtar too…
That’s a script I was writing. People confuse story with a script, a script with a screenplay and screenplay with a film. For now, there’s Malang.
We don’t know anything about its story…
(Cuts in) I assure you that there is a story. I couldn’t reveal much of the second half in the promo as it would kill the suspense. I could just introduce the genre and characters. Malang is essentially a state of mind, a man who is not bothered with societal norms. People are in this state only when they are in love… Or have lost everything that they love.
You have Anil Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur and Disha Patani in the cast…
Kunal Kemmu too, a much-underrated actor. I feel bad I launched him 15 years back in Kalyug when it was all about looks. Genuine talent is being recognised today and Kunal can put any actor to shame. Adi and he were always in the film. We wanted a girl who is liked by all but not known to all. Disha has done small, likable roles but no one really knows the girl. That’s the enigma of her character too. She has a sweet face and a hot body and our film will also reveal a fab actor.
For the bad guy, we wanted someone who’s known as a hero, and that was Mr Kapoor. On the set, he was like a producer, co-director and an actor.
Will we ever see you taking a break from the dark zone and direct a comedy?
Never say never. After Murder 2, everyone wanted me to make another thriller with Emraan (Hashmi), but I went ahead with an intense love story. Most thought it was a suicidal move but Aashiqui 2 changed my career.
What do you think about remixes and recreations?
I have nothing against them, but there should be a need for them. The biggest musical hit last year was Kabir Singh and it was all original music.

You started off with romances like Student Of The Year and Hasee Toh Phasee and now have moved to action-oriented films like A Gentleman, and Aiyaary. Why are you looking for a change in image?
It’s always exciting for the audience when you do something different. Personally I don’t think people associate me with romantic roles. I’ve done action films like Ek Villain and Brothers earlier too though this time we’ve taken the stunts a notch higher. A Gentleman has action, comedy, romance and a double role. I like the challenge of exploring a new world with every new film.
Initially, buzz was, A Gentleman is a part of the Bang Bang franchise and though you’ve denied it since, there will be inevitable comparisons between the two films. Prepared?
Our film has a different cast, directors, storyline, budget and is a different world from Bang Bang which was a remake of an English film (Knight And Day). The rumours started because it’s the same production house. We made it clear on the first day itself that A Gentleman was NOT Bang Bang 2 and you can see the difference in the trailer.
What’s your equation like with Jacqueline Fernandez?
We have worked in Brothers earlier but since we didn’t have any scenes together the only bonding happened during the promotions. She’s easy to get along with and doesn’t need ice-breakers. Stress, personal or professional, doesn’t affect her mood. She’s always happy and chirpy, a hardworking, self-made girl.
Your “Disco” song has you in John Travolta mode. Are you comfortable dancing now?
I’ve done films that didn’t have songs like Ek Villain and Brothers. When people don’t see me do songs for a while there is the impression that I’m not comfortable with song and dance. But the fact is that I’ve grown up on Hindi film songs and love them. I had a blast during “Chull”, “Kala Chashma”, “Baat Ban Jaaye” and now “Disco”. Even “Chandralekha” from A Gentleman was fun.
Neeraj Pandey with whom you are working on Aiyaary is known to remould his actors, give them a new image. So, can we expect another surprise?(Laughs) Neeraj is known for getting great performances from his actors. So, you can expect that surprise. It’s an exciting project.
Do you still consult your mentor Karan Johar on scripts?
Well, he’s a leading filmmaker, in tune with the times and a relevant personality in the industry. You can talk to him about anything. I don’t consult him on everything. All the decisions I’ve made after SOTY have been predominantly guided by instinct. If someone like Karan seconds it, it’s great, if not, I still go ahead and hope for the best. It’s not mandatory but he’s there if required. There aren’t too many people I can trust or seek guidance from.
When you go back home are you treated like a star?
My family treats this profession as any other though they understand they can’t take me to certain restaurants and areas now. So, there’s a sense of both excitement and regret. They treat me as normally as possible when I’m home. I don’t get the kind of tea or food I like and crib like I used to before.
Has Mumbai become home now?
Well, I still miss my family in Delhi, the lunches and interactions. And that won’t change unless they shifts to Mumbai and that’s not happening anytime soon.
There’s Alia Bhatt in Mumbai. What’s your reaction to link-ups?
(Laughs) Why only Alia, I’ve been linked with almost all my co-stars except Akshay Kumar.
Aashiqui 3 was announced with Alia and you and you’d said you wanted to sing in the film too. What’s the update on the musical?
I was approached a while ago. It’s a great franchise, I loved Aashiqui 2 and I’ve worked with both its director Mohit Suri and Alia. We are waiting to get it all on paper. We want to present a better version of the franchise. Once we finish our prior commitments we will start on Aashiqui 3.
How do you react to comparisons with contemporaries, in particular your fellow ‘student’ Varun Dhawan?
It’s like any other news. I have better ways to spend time than keep myself updated on what’s written about me. I’d rather expend energy on work. You are not the only player in any industry so comparisons are inevitable but in my journey to become an actor I had to work really hard, give so many auditions…
Your chemistry with Priyanka Chopra was praised in a recent commercial.
For us it was just a scene but the feedback was fantastic. She is a fabulous actor and it would be great to team up with her. But we need a script first.

Shraddha Kapoor rubbishes rumours that she is dating Farhan Akhtar, admits that the Saina Nehwal biopic will be her toughest film till date

In a shimmering silver dress, Shraddha Kapoor looks relaxed as we lounge in a suburban studio. In March she wrapped up Apoorva Lakhia’s Haseena: The Queen of Mumbai in which she plays Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parkar and has just announced a second biopic on badminton ace Saina Nehwal to be directed by Amole Gupte. Her biggest Haseena Parkar-related grouse is that while she was able to pump up her cheeks, add layers of fat around her stomach and hips, her arms remained skinny. “Everyone has their own body type,” she pouts. “But at least I could eat what I wished and not have to work out.”
Saina’s story, while at the other end of the spectrum from the lady don, is equally exciting as Shraddha was a good athlete in school and played everything from football, basketball and handball to long jump and high jump. “I also played badminton and I’m thrilled that in my quest to be the former World No. 1 and a youth icon, I’ll get to train in the sport again. I’m sure it’s going to be my most difficult film yet as Saina has spent her whole life playing badminton and in the next few months, I have to get close to the standards she’s set,” says the 30-year old actress who trained in basketball for about a month with National Basketball Association (NBA) coaches for Half Girlfriend.
Prep for Amole’s biopic starts soon after the release of Mohit Suri’s screen adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s 2014 novel by the same name. Shraddha plans to spend a lot of time with Saina and learn everything about her. She’s equally kicked about working with Amole whose comedy-drama Stanley Ka Dabba she loved. “He has fabulous energy and so much love to give. Such people are rare,” she raves.
She recently met the original Aashiqui girl, Anu Aggarwal, when Vishesh Films turned 30. She adds that Anu was really sweet and she has heard that Aashiqui 3 is in the pipeline but no one has approached her. “The Bhatts are the masters of the Aashiqui series, they should keep making it. I’m told Alia (Bhatt) and Sidharth (Malhotra) are doing it, I don’t know how true this is as neither have mentioned the film to me,” she shrugs.
She recently reunited with her Aashiqui 2 director and admits that whenever Mohit offers her a film she gives the nod without even listening to the story because she believes he will always give a memorable film and character. “He is like family. Our equation is something only the two of us understand and I really value this connection. He is a really good friend. Aashiqui 2 changed everything for Aditya (Roy Kapur) and me,” she says.
How did she react to rumours that she was seeing Mohit soon after the release of Aashiqui 2? “Were there any such rumours? I haven’t heard. I choose to ignore such questions,” she snaps. She’s also being linked to her Rock On 2 co-star, Farhan Akhtar, with reports suggesting that she has moved in with the 43-year-old, recently divorced actor-filmmaker, which has upset her father Shakti Kapoor. “The level of fiction can go to incredible heights. I choose to ignore them and just focus on my work,” she retorts. So, is Farhan a friend? “Yes,” she says shortly.
Meanwhile, her brother, Siddhanth, and her Half Girlfriend costar, Arjun Kapoor, are good friends but she got to know Arjun better while shooting for their romanticdrama. “Arjun is very respectful and likes to make people comfortable. I like that quality about him, his sense of humour and the effort he has put into his performance,” she gushes.
Shraddha’s character, Riya Somani is a poor little rich girl who is looking for happiness. “She has shut out love from her life because she is afraid to commit herself. That’s why she insists she’s Arjun’s half girlfriend. I never want to be like that. I want to believe in love. But I understand that certain experiences can make girls like Riya wary,” she reasons.
Has she read Chetan’s novel? “I started reading it but Mohit asked me not to as he has made some changes. He asked me to read the script instead,” she informs, adding that the film will be remembered for the 15 basketball classes she took, each of two-three hours duration. “I like the sport, I played it in school but then I was always a substitute and only called when one of the players were injured,” she laughs.

After delivering three back-to-back hits this year — Kapoor & Sons, Udta Punjab, and Dear Zindagi — Alia Bhatt, at 23, celebrated her success in a way by shifting into her new home with sister Shaheen. The apartment that was bought last July isn’t a long way off from her parents, Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan’s home.
“My old home is 10 steps away from where I now live. So, there is no question of missing my parents.” The need for an independent space arose more out of necessity than rebellion. “I never intended to stay alone. Why would I, when I have my family? But, often, I host acting workshops at my place or am busy with narration and I didn't wish to eat into my parents’ space," she tells hitlist.
Alia admits it feels “strange” to live alone, though she continues to spend two days a week with Mahesh and Soni to allow for a smooth transition. Initially, Mahesh was against the idea of her moving out, but was finally persuaded. “A father will always be concerned. He argued, saying that I could have my own space in our old home, but I somehow convinced him.”
Interestingly, the moving away is only on the personal front. Professionally, she is about to experience a homecoming of sorts, with the actress signing her first project with Mahesh and brother Mukesh Bhatt’s production house, Vishesh Films.
Alia, who recently won the Kamaal Ki Jodi award at Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards along with Varun Dhawan, will be paired with rumoured beau Sidharth Malhotra in Aashiqui 3, most likely to be directed by Mohit Suri. She says, “I am hoping it works out soon. I never denied my presence in Aashiqui 3. It’s just that I am waiting for the script so I can talk more about the film. As of now, there is a basic idea in place but the script is not ready. It’ll take a while before we roll.”

For over six months, Alia Bhatt has been cagey about being part of 'Aashiqui 3', despite a confirmation from uncle, producer Mukesh Bhatt and co-star Sidharth Malhotra. But now, director Mohit Suri, who happens to be the actress' cousin, has finally confirmed that Alia will play a singer in the romantic musical.
Speaking to hitlist, Mohit said, "Since it is part of the 'Aashiqui' franchise, Alia is playing a singer." Currently busy with the shoot of 'Half Girlfriend' with Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, the director is yet to decide when 'Aashiqui 3' will go on floors.
For now, he is making minor tweaks to Sidharth's character. The script is being penned by Alia's sister, Shaheen Bhatt. Hence, it's all in the family so far as the Aashiqui franchise is concerned — father Mahesh Bhatt had directed the first 'Aashiqui' (1990), and is the producer of the series itself, Alia has joined in as the star, or lead actor, and the singer, while Shaheen is figuring out the story.

Ever since Aashiqui 3 was announced last year, there were speculations surrounding the casting of the lead pair. Several names such as Hrithik Roshan, Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut did the rounds. However, Sidharth Malhotra put all rumours to rest last month after he confirmed that Alia Bhatt and he are part of the project. In fact, even Mukesh Bhatt had gone on record to say that the two have been roped in and fit the bill. He had said, “Yes, it is true. We have signed Sidharth and Alia for the film. They completely fit the role. When we make films we look for the perfect casting. They both fit the bill.” Therefore, it came as a surprise when the actress denied having signed Aashiqui 3 at a recent media interaction.

Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt are possibly one of the hottest pairs in Bollywood today. They have done two films together already and more filmmakers want to cast this pair together for their chemistry.

Initially, the film was being planned with Hrithik and Sonam, but after both actors opted out, the makers decided to cast Alia and Sid to cash in on the appeal of the real life couple. “It’s a great franchise to be a part of,” Sid believes.
Sid adds that he might even sing for the romantic flick. “The plan is to train and sing, so let’s see.” The actor will be playing a guitar in the film as well and is currently learning to play the instrument for the sake of authenticity.
Sidharth is currently shooting for his next action film opposite Jacqueline, post which he will start Ittefaq. Aashiqui 3 comes later.
