I manifested a house for 20 years and I finally have one-Aahana Kumra

Aahana Kumra seeks Union Health Minister's help for parents

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; July 5, 2022)

Aahana Kumra is beaming with enthusiasm as she welcomes us to her new abode in a suburban Mumbai high-rise. The actress who has been a part of the film industry for over a decade now tells us that she has always lived life on her own terms, even when it came to navigating through Bollywood’s tough terrain. The Lipstick Under My Burkha actress recently moved into her new home in Andheri, and the interiors of the home have been inspired by European architecture. And of course, her new pad has several happy and cozy corners for the actress to relax, unwind and enjoy a cuppa chai.

Showing us around ecstatically, while telling stories behind each vase, crockery and painting, she exclusively shares with us what the house means to her. “For me, a house should feel like a home not a hotel room. Ghar, ghar jaisa lagna chahiye. I am a huge fan of decluttered, simple houses. I love modern European decor and colours so that reflects here. Whenever I travelled to London or Paris, I would take pictures for reference and I have been doing this for years, even when I didn’t own a house. In 2002, I bought crockery for my future house and my mother neatly preserved it for 20 years (points towards the cupboard near the dining table). I have selected each tile, each lamp, art from places across the globe like London, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Dubai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Srinagar. I manifested a house for 20 years and I finally have one,” says Aahana.

After a brief pause, Aahana adds, “My heart is full of gratitude. It isn’t easy for women to work on their own terms in the film industry or otherwise, but I have been able to do that. When I look back, I’ve never had to prove my worth, beg for work or compromise on my work ethics. I have always maintained a healthy work-life balance where I spend as much time at home as I do at work. What’s the point of building a house when you can’t stay at home!”

Having lived with family all along, Aahana admits that her new found independence comes at a price. “I now know my dhobiwala, plumber, carpenter, doodhwala. I have never had to deal with issues of the house. I have always been dependent on my parents, so now having to learn new things as I moved into my new home was quite empowering. I worked full-time even as the interiors was being done, so I know how difficult it is for single working women. I would love my parents to come and stay with me. All of us have a life of our own, so we aren’t intrusive and give each other space, but we also need each other,” she concludes.

Actor Aahana S Kumra has been part of the entertainment industry for more than a decade and one thing that she swears by is not going by what critic reviews say about her or anyone else’s performance.

“I watch and decide for myself, and then [observe] what the audience says. Having said that, I feel one also has to be careful about what work you pick, how you want to resonate with your audience and how you want to be seen. My work has always been diverse. That’s interesting,” she says.

As for critic reviews, the actor maintains, “I don’t read too many [of them]. I feel if you cannot make a film, you cannot review. Everybody has an opinion, as simple as that. For instance, every food [variety] is different. If I like anything and you don’t, you will say you don’t like it. It’s simple analogy. A person who is reviewing, if they don’t like a certain scene and if it hasn’t resonated with them, it’s their opinion. There are so many films that I liked, but reviewers didn’t. Why should I force my review on you?”

Actors sometimes claim that movie reviews can get extreme, and seem like a personal attack rather than constructive criticism. Has Kumra, who was recently seen in the second season of the web show Avrodh, ever faced something like that? “I don’t think I am that famous that they personally attack me or have something against me,” says the Khuda Haafiz (2020) and Bawri Chhori (2021) actor, adding, “It has never happened. Reviewers like my work. It’s rare that I get bad reviews for my work.”

I didn’t say no to projects as I wanted to buy a house-Aahana Kumra

Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 3, 2022)

Actor Aahana S Kumra recently bought a house in the suburbs of Mumbai, which she describes as “a big achievement”. And she claims she has always manifested it: “For the past six years, whenever I travelled for shoots, I used to pick up something or the other, like carpets and showpieces, for my own house [even before purchasing it].”

The Call My Agent: Bollywood actor adds that “getting a house in Mumbai is a big deal” and confesses that she has been cutting down on her expenses to buy it. “I barely went out because I wanted to save money. In the last few years, I’ve hardly said no to a project. Thankfully, all that has converted into something great for me,” she says, adding that buying a car and holiday home is the next big goal for her.

The 37-year-old reveals that her parents are “over the moon” about the new abode and that they will be moving in with her soon.

The Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016) actor shares, “I have always had them around me. I’m not somebody who’s very big on (hanging out with) friends. In fact, I love vacationing with my family.”

Talking further about her personal life, the actor shares that she spent the last month taking care of her mum, who had to be hospitalised after contracting Coronavirus. Kumra recalls, “I was in Aishmuqam Dargah, Kashmir, when my sister told me that mum had to be admitted. I was completely rattled and started crying inside the dargah.”

She adds, “There was a cloud of depression when I came back to Mumbai. I had dedicated the entire January to her. I hardly took up shooting. But God heard my prayers and she’s fine now.”

Mother drives down to bring Aahana Kumra back home

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 19, 2020)

Actor Aahana Kumra is happy to be reunited with her parents, after nearly two months of being separated due to the lockdown. She shared the news on Instagram, posting a picture with her mother who drove from one part of Mumbai to the other and back, to bring Kumra home.

Revealing the sequence of events, she tells us, “In March, I had gone to my sister’s place in Ghatkopar, from Andheri where I live with my parents. I was going to stay there for a week, when suddenly the lockdown was announced.”

Kumra couldn’t even drive back to her house as she didn’t have her car with her. “My driver had dropped me off at my sister’s place. I’d think every day, ‘Today I’ll surely leave’ but that went on for two months. My sister is a working mother, and she’s got a three-year-old child. It’s quite a handful for young parents — they have to work from home, which is a joke as it means no fixed working hours,” says Kumra. Hence, she was helping her sister with household chores. “My parents are above 65, I didn’t want them to drive all the way to pick me up. Dad said he’ll come, but he had undergone three surgeries last year, and my mom isn’t confident about driving. But eventually, she made up her mind, and took permission to come and pick me up,” shares the 33-year-old.

Making things tougher was the fact that the building where her parents stay had been sealed due to a Coronavirus case. “But she forgot everything when we reached home. She was like, ‘Yoga karte hain’. It’s good to see my parents. They were all alone, though having a cook was a big help. They missed having me around, I bring a lot of noise into the house!” Kumra quips.

They've cordoned off whole building. I'm concerned for my parents who are currently living there-Aahana Kumra

As Lokhandwala highrise is sealed after doctor resident tests COVID-19 positive, resident Aahana Kumra, who had moved to sister's Ghatkopar pad, expresses concern about her parents who are locked in

pic"This one hits close to home," admits Aahana Kumra, hours after the highrise in Lokhandwala, Andheri, where she resides, was sealed. On Wednesday evening, after a doctor living in the residential complex tested positive for Coronavirus, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials swung into action and sealed the premises.

The actor, who has been living with her sister in Ghatkopar since the lockdown was announced mid-March, rues, "I am concerned for my parents who are currently living there. They've cordoned off the whole building." While she understands that the clampdown is a necessary measure at this hour, Kumra is worried about her father. "My biggest concern is my father's health because he is diabetic. Luckily, medicines are being delivered to the building gate. My family has stocked up on the essentials, but if this continues for long, the situation [may get difficult]. We are making umpteen calls to each other to lighten the situation. I am feeling guilty because I am not with them right now."

Sushant Singh, residentIt is believed that the doctor may have been infected when he recently consulted some patients who had flown in to the country. While the doctor is undergoing treatment at the LH Hiranandani Hospital in Powai, his family members have tested negative.

Actor Sushant Singh, who also stays in the Andheri highrise, says, "We are following the government guidelines. All essential supplies are being delivered to the gate. Police officers are at the gate [ensuring no one enters or exits the premises]."
