Despite growing conversations around inclusivity, colour bias continues to be a harsh reality for many. A recent episode of the reality show Tum Ho Naa - Ghar Ki Superstar, hosted by Rajeev Khandelwal, once again brought the issue into focus when a contestant opened up about the colour-based remarks she endured while growing up.
Moved by her story, Rajeev spoke out against colour discrimination, stressing that a person’s appearance should never become the yardstick by which they are judged.
Speaking to Mumbai Mirror later, the actor said it is disheartening that prejudices around skin colour continue to persist, even in a society that prides itself on progress.
“It is really sad that even today our society continues to be plagued by issues like casteism, dowry and colour discrimination. I have always wondered how people can judge someone based on the colour of their skin. You may have your personal preference, but that gives you absolutely no right to pass comments or make judgements about those who don’t fit that preference. Who are we to decide which colour is superior? It all comes down to a misplaced sense of superiority, where people impose their beliefs on those who are different from them.”
Having spent many years in the entertainment industry, Rajeev believes that conversations around appearance need to give way to those centred on respect, equality and empathy.
“I don’t speak about this because I’m an actor. I speak because it’s what I believe in,” he says, adding, “The most important thing, wherever you are and whoever you’re with, is to treat people with respect. Treat others the way you would want to be treated yourself. Colour doesn’t define a person... our deeds do.”
