What began as social media criticism has escalated into a political and legal issue, with actor-dancer Nora Fatehi’s song Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke drawing objections over its lyrics. The song, from the film KD - The Devil, triggered backlash after its lyrical version was released on March 14, with several users calling the lyrics “double-meaning” and inappropriate.
The issue soon moved beyond social media. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said in the Lok Sabha that the song has been banned. He was responding to Samajwadi Party MP Anand Bhadauria, who raised the matter in the House and sought clarification. The controversy also prompted action from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which issued a notice over the song following complaints about its content.
“Already ban lag chuka hai. Main spasht taur se… kehna chahunga ke freedom of speech mein jo responsible restrictions hain unse hi chalna chahiye,” Vaishnaw said.
Later in the day, responding to the uproar, Nora, addressed the issue on Instagram: “I’d hate for anyone to think I endorse this,” she said. She also urged people to stop sharing it, saying it only gives the content more visibility. On Tuesday, while talking to us, lyricist Raqueeb Alam distanced himself from the song, saying that the lyrics were originally written in Kannada by the film’s director and that he was only asked to translate them into Hindi.

Some of you guys trying to use this as an opportunity to attack my character. It’s unfortunate. Me and my team will be more careful in the future in such situations. I want to reiterate I had no idea about this Hindi song, I did not perform to it and there was no permission taken to use it with my image.
