DHURANDHAR has become the highest grossing Hindi film and is among the biggest HITS of all time or at least in recent times. The film has also broken the rules as the template of this film is different from any other huge blockbuster. Generally, the biggest blockbusters are based on human relationships be it of family, love or friendship. There will always be other reasons but that core is human relationships.

We can go back to MOTHER INDIA, BOBBY, SHOLAY, HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN to the recent BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION and PUSHPA 2 - THE RULE. All these films will have many elements but the base is human relationships. Even GADAR and ANIMAL are about family relationships although other elements get highlighted more.

Here, DHURANDHAR is a gangster film without this family and human relationships at the core. The fact that's its a gangster film and its come so far is pretty amazing as these films have never been huge HITS. As this is Pakistan based gangster film and not that typical Mumbai one, there is a novelty and probably gives it more resonance in the North which has meant all records gone in North India and by margins.

The makers need a certain skill set to make these blockbusters and generally this skill set has been sinking in the Hindi film industry and before DHURANDHAR, it was GADAR 2 which was the biggest HIT from this film industry and it came from a director with that old skill set. Even South films like BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION and PUSHPA 2 - THE RULE come from that old school set. However, DHURANDHAR is more modern and does not come from that school and what this does is shows that films can reach the heights with this more modern type of filmmaking where the base is not emotions. The fact remains that the filmmaker of today is weaker in emotions and maybe its because the way the world is today and here you have a film which has gone this far without the emotional value of those big films of yore.

The caveat is has this film gone so far because of the politics involved and the alignmnet to the ruling party and this will only be known in time. If over the next decade, its the emotions based films still smashing records it will be as it was before. But if not, then it will be that DHURANDHAR was the first to break the mould.
--------------------------------------
DHURANDHAR broke more records with another weekly record total as it collected around 48 crore nett in its fifth week. There has never even been a film close to this in week five with CHHAAVA having the best total at 27 crore nett. The total collections of the film stand at 747 crore nett till date which is now above the 736 crore nett total of PUSHPA 2 - THE RULE and far above the 577 crore nett which was the highest for an original Hindi film.

The footfalls of DHURANDHAR stand at a little over 3.3 crore after five weeks and it should end at around 3.5 crore which would make it the highest for an original Hindi film post the pandemic though it will not reach the near 4 crore total of PUSHPA 2 - THE RULE set last year which will remain the most watched Hindi film post pandemic. This will be the target for DHURANDHAR 2 to chase as then the comparison will be sequel against sequel.

The film has smashed all records in North India by margins as Delhi/UP stands at 170 crore nett apprx and East Punjab is at almost 70 crore nett. The North India collections will comfortably cross 250 crore nett and till date only STREE 2 had touched the 200 crore nett in the North (Delhi/UP, East Punjab). The Pakistan setting has really pushed the numbers in these belts as gangster films historically have been a no no in these circuits and generally gangster films have been Mumbai based before.
