Nishaanchi, directed by Anurag Kashyap, is in the Gangs Of Wasseypur zone. Just like the 2012 classic, it's a two-part saga with loads of crime and comedy. Anurag starts the film at a certain point, establishes the characters and setting and hints at simmering tensions and back stories. Once the flashback begins, one kind of knows what to expect and yet one looks forward to the goings-on. A few songs stand out and are very well composed and picturized. The climax is superb, with an indication that the second part will be explosive. However, the film is too long (179 minutes) and a few songs are needlessly added. A film like this should have been gripping from start to finish, but that doesn't happen; this goes against the film to a great extent. The villain seems weak, at least in the first part. Aaishvary Thackeray makes one of the finest debuts in recent times. He even plays a double role in his first film, which is a feat. Monika Panwar initially seems young for mother's role, but soon proves her worth. Vedika Pinto has limited screen time in the first half but goes to another level post-interval. Kumud Mishra is terrific as the antagonist. Viineet Kumar Singh once again delivers an award-worthy performance. Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub is dependable. Durgesh Kumar (Bank Security Guard) makes his presence felt with just one scene. All in all, Nishaanchi is a great effort and deserves to be seen. Here's hoping the fans of Anurag Kashyap, for once, come out in full force and support this well-made piece of cinema in theatres. (P.S.: Watch out for the post-credit scene).
