Urmila Matondkar feels that in today’s entertainment industry, where both insiders and outsiders are making their debut, it’s increasingly difficult to achieve star status. With numerous platforms welcoming artistes and a vast sea of talent, she believes that standing out has become a significant challenge.
She explains, “With social media, everyone is a star now. Just look at influencers – they’re celebrities too. I feel for the young actors entering the industry today with dreams of becoming stars. It’s difficult for them to achieve stardom. They’re up against the monster social media has created.”
Earlier, Urmila also discussed how casting decisions are increasingly influenced by social media following. “A lot of artistes are buying followers to boost their numbers. It’s crazy. But everyone has their approach. The industry has changed so much. I still believe that talent should be the primary factor in determining who gets work. An actor’s worth should be based on their performance, not their follower count,” she says.
