Actor Chhaya Kadam, known for her outings in movies such as Laapataa Ladies (2023) and All We Imagine As Light (2024), is facing legal trouble in the wake of allegations that she has consumed the meat of some protected wildlife species. The Maharashtra Forest Department has summoned Chhaya for questioning in this regard, following a complaint filed by the Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a Mumbai-based NGO.
As per reports, Chhaya mentioned in a radio interview that she has tasted the meat of animals such as mouse deer, rabbits, wild boar, monitor lizards, and porcupines, which come under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
PAWS filed a formal complaint with the Thane Chief Conservator of Forests and Divisional Forest Officer, urging legal action against the actor and others involved, reports Free Press Journal (FPJ).
“We got in touch with her over the phone, and she informed us that she is out of town for work and will return only after four days. She has also told us that she is seeking legal advice and will appear before us for the investigation,” investigating officer Rakesh Bhoir told FPJ.
The Maharashtra Forest Department has launched a formal inquiry, with a special team tracking down poachers in the area where the alleged activity occurred. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
As the investigation unfolds, Chhaya’s comments have sparked widespread concern, with many calling for accountability and action against wildlife poaching and consumption.
