Unni Mukundan's surprise hit 'Marco' not been bought by any OTT platform, makers bat for theatrical experience
Box Office India Trade Network

The dubbed film MARCO has fizzled out in its Hindi version after doing pretty well in week two. The film started with a limited release and with that, it had reasonable collections. But in week three, the release got much bigger but it could not give the collections as it does not have much for masses from the trailer and seems to be inspired from a South Korean film. The zone is for television and more so streaming due to niche content. It may be action but its urban without wider appeal.

The film had low occupancy in week three and with that, it was inevitable it was not going anywhere far and collections would come down in week four. The film got media support and gets made out to be a hit which is far from the truth. The South films are coming with heavy budgets for paid media but here this was not a case of paid media but probably as they gave the four/five stars or use this as a tool to put BABY JOHN down. This is because in week three it was BABY JOHN's screens which this film got as the Varun Dhawan-starrer did not fare well.

If this was a original Hindi film and got these collections with the release going to such a level, it would be a totally different narrative. It can be said its done well for a film from Kerala but films from there don't get to 1000 screens. So when you get there, you have to do the collections which are commensurate with such a release. This film has not been able to do so.

There is always a story set by certain makers of smaller films that they don't get a release; that's why their don't do well and that its the doing of the bigger players who hog the screen space. The fact is that even if you release on 10 cinemas, you can go on to be a blockbuster. That 10 can go to 100 and then to 1000 to even more in no time if public is on your side. Films don't fail because of less screens but content. Pre pandemic, that maker of films like GANGS OF WASSEYPUR and DEV D had such an agenda about not getting screens. However, it was always a case of sour grapes and refusal to accept that content is bad. Basically all talk but no result.
