J D Majethia recently shared on Instagram that he almost fell prey to an online scam. Such cases have increasingly been reported of late.

Shocked, the filmmaker-actor says, “I was getting calls from an unknown numbers for many days but I ignored it. Then one day, in the morning, I picked it up as I thought it would be the bank. They started shouting at me and said they are calling from the Customs Office.”

As he had “nothing to do with it”, he didn’t lose his cool or calm. He added, “They told me, ‘Saat din pehle, aapne Cambodia mein parcel bheja’. I thought it must be a case of mistaken identity.”

The 55-year-old was told they had “proof”. He adds, “We covered such scams on our show Wagle Ki Duniya. I asked them for handwritten proof. Mera mann nahi maan raha tha. He said they sent an email, but checked my inbox and hadn’t got anything. He then asked for the last four digits of my Aadhaar card. At this point I realized it is a scam.”

He said the crooks were persistent and “called from different numbers as they wanted to get my data”. “I decided I should share about this incident on social media to make people aware,” he ends.
