WILL CREW AND GODZILLA X KONG: THE EMPIRE BRING CHEER FOR THE INDUSTRY?

The last two weeks haven’t been encouraging for the industry. Yodha failed to succeed and will end its lifetime under Rs. 35 crores. Last week’s releases, Madgaon Express and Swatantrya Veer Savarkar have found patronage mainly in Maharashtra. Madgaon Express should cross the Rs. 20 crore mark while Swatantrya Veer Savarkar will end its lifetime at around Rs. 15 crores.

Thankfully, the two big releases this week look exciting. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is part of the popular Monsterverse and the last film, Godzilla vs. Kong, was a huge hit. Though released during the start of the second wave of Covid-19 wave in March 2021, it did a healthy business of around Rs. 45 crores. If the theatres had not shut in April 2021, then the film could have had a lifetime of nearly Rs. 75 crores.

Godzilla vs. Kong opened at Rs. 6.42 crores. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, hopefully, should open at around Rs. 10 crores. The holy month of Ramzan and examinations will dent its collections. But in the long run, the film will manage to get the audience it’ll miss in the first week, provided the content is exciting. The mass audience has always loved the character of Kong and they’ll surely come in hordes to watch Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Crew, meanwhile, stars Kareena Kapoor, Tabu and Kriti Sanon. It is directed by Rajesh Krishnan of Lootcase fame and is produced by Ekta Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. Diljit Dosanjh and Kapil Sharma also star in supporting roles. The actresses play air hostesses in this crime comedy, which seems inspired by the Kingfisher Airlines-Vijay Mallya bankruptcy episode. The teaser and trailer have worked and the songs, on the other hand, have become a rage.

Crew can have an opening of Rs. 7-8 crores. With no major film next week, it’s crucial that both these movies work well so that the audience keeps flocking in until the Eid releases – Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan – hit cinemas.
