Rashmika reacts to deepfake clip; Big B calls for legal action
HINDUSTAN TIMES (November 7, 2023)

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has joined the calls for legal action after a deepfake video of actor Rashmika Mandanna went viral on social media. The morphed video shows a woman with Mandanna’s face entering a lift, wearing a black swimsuit. Taking to X to voice his concern for his Goodbye co-star, Bachchan wrote, “Yes this is a strong case for legal.”

Breaking her silence on the clip, Mandanna issued a statement on social media: “Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me, but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused.”

She added, “Today, as a woman and as an actor, I am thankful for my family, friends and well wishers who are my support system. But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I can’t imagine how could I ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity theft.

Soon after the video was uploaded, several social media users came forward to confirm it was a deepfake. On close observation, one can notice that when the woman enters the lift, her face changes Mandanna’s. The woman in the original video is British-Indian content creator Zara Patel, who had uploaded it on October 9.
