The box office for Punjabi films has taken a jump this year also for the films that work as Overseas numbers get bigger. CARRY ON JATTA 3 has emerged as the biggest grosser in India with business of 45 crore nett while MASTANEY will get the tag of the highest grosser overseas as it becomes the first Punjabi film to hit the $5 million mark.
Before CARRY ON JATTA 3, which has crossed the 90 crore mark worldwide, the highest mark was 60 crore worldwide by its predecessor CARRY ON JATTA 2. Now even MASTANEY has comfortably gone past the benchmark of CARRY ON JATTA 2. CARRY ON JATTA 2 was a long standing record.
There is a big difference between CARRY ON JATTA 3 and MASTANEY in India as MASTANEY will do around 27 crore nett compared to the 45 crore nett on CARRY ON JATTA 3. But overseas, it has smashed all records due to a religious flavour which supports business in overseas. The film got a 15 certificate in some circuits and a lower certification would have pushed business even higher.
The 100 crore mark for Punjabi films is now pretty realistic and it will be no surprise if it happens within a year or two. A 50 crore nett total in India and $5 million in Overseas will mean the 100 crore WW milestone is achieved.
The Punjabi films to top 40 Crore worldwide are below..
1. Carry On Jatta 3 - 91 crore
2. Mastaney - 68 crore (70-72 cr expected)
3. Carry On Jatta 2 - 60 crore
4. Saunkan Saunkne - 58 crore
5. Honsla Rakh - 55 crore
6. Shadaa - 54.50 crore
7. Chal Mera Putt 2 - 54 crore
8. Chaar Sahibzaade - 50 crore
9. Sardaarji - 45 crore
NOTE - All the figures for Canada are reported in C$ on Comscore and have been converted to $USD. There was a time when the currency difference was not there so it was fine. The Hindi films reported on the site have been taking the Comscore number knowing the Canada side was C$ but that's the way within the industry and also the ratio of Canada business is limited though growing. For Punjabi films, the ratio from Canada is huge and so, the conversion is a must.
