Taking the road less travelled and jaded by what she feels is Hindi film industry’s inability to tap her potential, actor Amrya Dastur is now focussing on regional cinema.

“Doing out-and-out commercial cinema was never on my mind. I did indie and offbeat films because they gave me the opportunity to act,” says the Kaalakaandi and Rajma Chawal (2018) actor, adding, “I still get offered the pretty furniture roles, but now it’s easier for me to say no because people in the industry know I prefer niche projects. And it has worked to my advantage — I’m seen as someone who can act.”

For the right roles, Dastur does not mind going out there and auditioning. “It keeps me grounded. In my head, I’m like, ‘Okay, you want me to audition? Fine. I’ll give you the best one you’ll see’,” says Dastur, who is looking forward to the release of her Punjabi films Chidiyan Da Chamba and Furteela.
