‘People feel I recovered fast, so I don’t understand the seriousness of cancer’

On National Cancer Survivors Day (June 4), actor Chhavi Mittal posted a workout video on Instagram and shared how she has “garnered strength to fight the dreaded disease”. But, she was soon met with comments of her going overboard and being “too much” when it comes to cancer awareness.

“I don’t understand how much is too much, too less or enough. Hence, I don’t know how to react to these people,” says Mittal, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in April last year.

The mother of two goes on to say, “When I spoke about cancer, everybody felt it’s great. But now — just because I have recovered fast — many feel I don’t understand the seriousness of this disease. It is really unfair.”

The 42-year-old took each day as it came while recovering, rather than feeling sad about it. That, she feels, is something those trolling her can’t relate to: “Having cancer doesn’t mean life has ended. So, I’m not shy talking about it.”

That being said, Mittal is aware that when she posts something on social media, it will get mixed responses. “I share comments about these trolls because it is important to voice that opinion,” she concludes.

‘SOME COMMENTS DESERVE A REPLY’
The actor isn’t one to pay much heed to trolls, but feels it is vital to name and shame at times: “People troll when they’re resentful, unhappy and want to create a stir in someone else’s life. These people are living in a shell and don’t have a voice. They should be brought out, so that they don’t do that to others.”

‘SUPERFLUOUS’ SOCIAL MEDIA
Mittal can’t seem to wrap her head around claims of her “speaking too much” on cancer. “When a fitness enthusiast talks of fitness, that never gets too much. If a cancer survivor talks about it on National Cancer Survivors Day, someone will get up and say, ‘It’s getting too much!’ It’s so superfluous,” she rues.
