The fact that several celebs walked the Cannes red carpet, including those who had no film screenings at the festival in the French Riviera, surprised Onir. The filmmaker recently took to Twitter to share his views: “Never got it why people go to #CannesFilmFestival just to be clicked wearing all kinds of costumes (very often strange) when they don’t have any of their films screening, Nor are they passionate about watching films and panel discussions. Does one really feel good doing this? (sic).”
Talking about it, he says, “People put pictures of them wearing so many clothes at Cannes, but no one talks about the films that are [screened] there, which are among the best from across the world.”
What Onir is also not able to wrap his head around is that people going from India don’t wear outfits that represent our culture. “Most of them wear stuff that doesn’t represent our country’s tradition or fashion. I feel it makes no difference to the world if they get photographed there or not. What matters is their work,” says the 54-year-old, adding, “Is anyone talking about the filmmakers from Manipur and Assam who went to Cannes? People should post about the films they watched and not the clothes they wore.”
