(Crisp) Movie Review: THE WHALE by FENIL SETA

The Whale is a 2022 Hollywood film and it was released in India earlier this month, to take advantage of the Oscar buzz. It tells the story of a very obese, reclusive English teacher who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. It is adapted from a play and hence it is set in just one house. The dialogues are sharp and various intriguing developments happen in the film that keeps the interest going. Sadly, at 118 minutes, it’s too long and after a point, things seem repetitive. The reactions of a few characters also seem superficial. Moreover, it can make for a depressing and heartbreaking watch. What makes The Whale worth watching is the performance of Brendan Fraser. He's simply outstanding and the way he has got into the skin of his character is seen to be believed. He surely deserves an Oscar. Hong Chau (Liz) is lovely and makes her presence felt. Sadie Sink (Ellie) plays a difficult role with ease and perfection. Ty Simpkins (Thomas) leaves a mark. All in all, The Whale deserves to be seen for Brendan Fraser's award-worthy performance.
