WE ARE STRUGGLING WITH MEDIOCRITY ON WEB: RADHIKA
Radhika Apte says whoever wants to make money, starts dumbing down the content

Radhika Apte has a large body of work on streaming platforms, with projects such as Ghoul, Sacred Games, Raat Akeli Hai, etc. to her credit. The actor’s most recent one, the critically acclaimed Monica, O My Darling, is also a web venture.

However, the digital space appears to have reached a saturation point as her fellow actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who has also worked in the OTT space extensively, stated some time ago. He even added that he will not work on web shows anymore.

Regarding Apte’s take on the matter — if she will follow suit — she says, “I don’t look at the platform as if it has nothing to do with anything. People consume what they like. Of course everyone’s trying to make money; it’s a business at the end of the day. So, you always reach that plateau of some kind of mediocrity,” shares the actor, who is in London at the moment, soaking in Christmas fervour.

However, the 37-year-old, who is basking in the success of Monica, O My Darling, does agree that a wave of “mediocrity” has swept the web space, much like how we have been coping with “mediocrity in films”.

Apte explains, “Now, mediocrity on web platforms is the same [thing as in films]. I don’t think the medium makes any difference; the content does. At the end of the day, whoever wants to make money, starts dumbing down the content. I don’t think it has to do with the platform or Bollywood films releasing in theatres. We just have to keep trying to make things we want to watch.”
