Mumbai: In yet another instance of sudden cardiac death among young Mumbaikars, 46-year-old television actor Siddhaanth Vir Surryavanshi collapsed while working out in a suburban gym on Friday. He was taken to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri where doctors tried to revive him for 40 minutes, but he was declared dead.

This is the second such incident in recent months. On September 21, popular standup comedian and actor Raju Srivastava (58) died at AIIMS in New Delhi after suffering cardiac arrest while working out in a gym. In November 2021, southern film actor Puneeth Rajkumar died suddenly after a workout.

Cardiologist Dr Ganesh Kumar (who isn’t attached to the Andheri hospital where Surryavanshi was rushed to) said even regular gymmers need to be careful to not do physical exercises with only afew hours of sleep. “Those who want to take up gymming should first undergo a cardiac evaluation,” he said.

The problem is that small plaque deposits in blood vessels that are usually considered benign (in comparison to well-defined blockages) can rupture with sudden activity - be it gymming, running, lifting weights or undertaking a high-stress assignment. “It is not advisable for people to undertake intense activity while eating next to nothing or sleeping only for three hours,” said Dr Kumar.

Surryavanshi made his television debut with Kkusum and then he was part of Krishna Arjun, Kasautii Zindagii Kay. He is survived by wife and two children.

National Award-winning filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri tweeted: "This so tragic &sad. The mad rush to build an aggressive body, without any medical advice is so dangerous. Hyper-Gymming is a relatively new phenomenon that got mad impetus due to Instagram. It needs to be regulated for sure. Society needs to rethink. Oh, Siddhanth…. "

The Oshiwara police has registered an accidental death report (ADR). Senior inspector Manohar Dhanwade said the actor collapsed while he was working out at the gym. “No foul play was found,” said Dhanwade.
