It’s always about survival in the industry, says Roshan

It’s been a busy past couple of months for Malayalam actor Roshan Mathew. While August kicked off with the release of Darlings — which got the Hindi audience to take notice of his craft — September was unrelenting too, with projects such as Cobra, Kotthu and Oru Thekkan Thallu Case coming out.

And while it’s common to feel overwhelmed by work pressure, Mathew says he is enjoying this phase as he is “consciously choosing to look at the positive side. “I enjoy the fact that the nature of survival in this industry keeps changing. You never get used to anything. By the time you think you have found a solution to something, your problems have completely morphed into something else,” he says, adding, “That way, it’s a really exciting process.”

Speaking further about the fragility of the industry, the actor adds, “On an everyday basis, it keeps fluctuating. One day, you are feeling confident and the next day, you feel like everything is so futile. It’s always about survival. That’s how I look at it, because any time I am working, I am doing it to get more work.”

One aspect that has stood out in his seven-year filmography is that the actor has never been typecast. “I always look for variety in the choices I make. I don’t want to take the chances of two characters ending up similar even when they are only slightly comparable on paper. It would take an extremely skilled, nuanced actor to make two similar characters look different on screen,” says Mathew, who will be next be seen in Chera and Gold.
