Filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah completed 20 years in the film industry this year. Aankhen, his debut film as a director, was a heist movie, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal and Paresh Rawal. The film, which was adapted from the popular Gujarati play Aandhlo Paato, had hit the screens in 2002. Two decades later, Vipul is gearing up to helm his second heist movie. He is planning to direct the film, which he is currently writing.
Vipul says, “I am working on two scripts at the moment. One is a robbery/heist film, my first such film after Aankhen. It has been two decades. I have found a very interesting subject, which is unique, exciting and unusual. I think people will love it and that will be the film I will start soon. We hope to start in a few months. Post that, I have another project that I’m working on, but I will talk about that later.”
The last film that Vipul helmed was Namaste England, which was a romantic family drama featuring Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra. When asked what drew him to the heist genre, the filmmaker says, “In India, robbery or heist films have not been explored much as a genre. I have been looking for a story revolving around a robbery or a heist for a long time. Finally, I found a subject that excited me. This genre works wonderfully because there are interesting characters, a range of motives, edge-of-the-seat drama and a lot of intense moments. It’s challenging for a filmmaker to justify why his characters have chosen to rob...there’s so much room for things to happen. It’s a difficult, but very fulfilling space to work in.”
