The box office in India has started to get going again and there are a couple of green shoots which promises better things to come.
The film which collected the most over the last weekend was Telugu film SR KALYANAMANDAPAM which collected around 3.50-4 crore nett over its first weekend. The film did good occupancy on the first day in Nizam where 100% occupancy is being allowed. The collections in Andhra were so so where only 50% occupancy is allowed.
The main release across India was THE SUICIDE SQUAD and this film collected around 1.75-2 crore nett but it was a four day weekend as the film released on Thursday. The occupancy here could have been better.
There was also a Punjabi film TUNKA TUNKA which collected around 80-85 lakhs nett over four days but it recorded with very good occupancy on Sunday as nearly 50% of its four day weekend business came on Sunday. Major centres like Chandigarh and Ludhiana were very good on Sunday despite some properties not open.
The business at the moment will be about occupancy rates which will determine how well films are doing as many cinemas being shut leads to smaller releases which means the numbers will be limited as compared to before the pandemic.
