Main Kavita Hoon, a series curated by Kavita Seth, became increasingly popular among classical music lovers in the country. This year, however, the singer has taken the virtual route to post these musical sessions where she composes and performs ghazals from words penned by legendary poets from the yesteryear.
She says, “I’ve done three sessions so far, which I’ve dedicated to Dr Wasim Barelvi, Amrita Pritam and Bashir Badr. The list of poets is so long that my life will fall short before I can record their poems and make ghazals. Whenever I sit down for my riyaaz, I compose them and create a musical bank. Once things are normal, I’ll release them.”
Seth shares that she’s happy to “be the bridge” between yesteryear poets and the young audience. “It is our duty to familiarise this generation, which has almost stopped reading books, with our literature. When poetry takes the form of music, it leaves an indelible impression on minds,” she says.
The Jeete Hain Chal (Neerja; 2016) singer confides that though she has a lot of time to compose music now, she is unable to release them due to “financial crunch”. She rues, “Over the past one-and-a-half year, I haven’t done a single live concert. That was my major source of income. I’ve conceptualised a few projects but I’m not getting any sponsors. Hence, my younger son, Kanishk, has produced a few of my songs.”
