With an extremely long discography which include superhit tracks such as Gilehriyaan (Dangal; 2016), Sacchi Mohabbat (Manmarziyaan; 2018) and Dil Ka Telephone (Dream Girl; 2019), singer Jonita Gandhi has made a mark for herself in the music industry. She started her career by singing covers of songs and gained popularity when her versions started going viral online. In the truest sense, Gandhi charted her own path in this industry and says that unfortunately, “talent doesn’t triumph all in the mainstream music scene”.
Last year was especially difficult for everyone including people in the entertainment business. And Gandhi says that it was stressful for her as well. “But the past year was a blessing in disguise. I was able to take some time to re-evaluate many aspects of my personal life and my career and it has given my some clarity on what truly makes me happy. It has also given me a better sense of direction on what I want to do, which is what I want to spend the new year doing more of,” she says.
Apart from the pandemic, 2020 was difficult for Bollywood for several other reasons with conversations about nepotism and favouritism coming to the foreground. Gandhi agrees that there is some truth to them. “Sometimes, there are traces of favouritism and nepotism in some aspects of the industry, but I do my best to stay focussed on myself and my talent,” she signs off.
