Mumbai: The Malad police registered a case against Bollywood producer, actor and film critic Kamaal R Khan for ‘indulging in attacks based on religion’ over social media. The charges were pressed by Yuva Sena member Rahul Kanal on Tuesday.

In his statement to the police, Kanal said that Khan had been making distasteful statements about certain Bollywood actors on Twitter. In his review of an upcoming film, Khan allegedly made remarks intended to spread hatred among communities, according to Kanal’s complaint. The police said that Khan was presently out of the country and would be summoned for questioning once he returned.

“We have registered a case under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology (IT) Act against Khan,” said senior inspector George Fernandes of the Malad police station.

In response to Kanal’s complaint against him, Khan tweeted on Wednesday: “I just want to know is Rahul Kanal the Home Minister of Maharashtra, CM of Maharashtra or PM? One day he files an FIR against me at Bandra police station, next day at Malad police station and the next day at Goregaon police station. How can you do this?”
