After about 20 years in the business and numerous films to his credit, actor Emraan Hashmi is changing gears. At this stage in his career, where he’s doing a variety of roles, we asked him if he has given direction a thought, given that he started off as an assistant director years ago and has co-written a book with author Bilal Siddiqi.

Emraan said, “People say that I might make a good director, but it takes a certain mindset. I don’t know if I am ready for that yet. If I shift gears, I would take time off for a year or so, and then get down to directing. I wouldn’t do that right now with so much work on my plate. As a director, you have to be tuned into the film from start to finish. Understanding the technical aspects deeply, and getting a crew is a different ball game when you lead the pack. I have been an assistant director, and so, I know what it takes. Right now, acting and direction will be tough to pull off together; so, one thing at a time.”

The actor added, “As for writing, I don’t have the discipline to write. I used to write once upon a time, but it did not have a form. I need to get back to that discipline. The book I co-wrote was about a close and personal experience. But never say never; who knows I might just end up writing a script.”
