Despite “ample opportunities” he got in films across languages — Marathi, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, and Gujarati — actor Sachin Khedekar feels he’s yet to get a powerful performance oriented role in Hindi films.
“The commercial Hindi cinema is mostly about star power, that’s why I get fringe characters in big films. Here, character actors become image bound, and breaking an image is tough,” opines the actor, who has done Hindi films such as Baadshah (1999), Astitva (2000) and Singham (2011).
Pointing at the flaws in the casting process, Khedekar adds, “When they want a person from the North, they look for those faces, and to cast for a Gujarati character, they go to actors from Gujarat. There’s nothing wrong with it as they want to be authentic, but they don’t trust actors to look the part, even if they’re personally not from the region. Such segregation makes it tough for actors like me who suffer.”
Looking forward to his web film, Khedekar feels OTT is suited for his kind of roles. “It gives you creative freedom and lets you explore a character. Unlike, the commercial trappings of Hindi cinema, or on TV, which is a TRP driven medium, OTT is a perfect space for me,” he says.
