The number of horror films that Ajay Devgn may have dabbled in over his almost three-decade-long career could be counted on one hand. But that isn't a reflection of his interest in the journey of those widely regarded as pioneers of the genre in India. The actor, along with production partner Priti Sinha, who has acquired the rights of an adaptation of the life of the Ramsay Brothers, will back the Ritesh Shah-penned project.

Daughter of producer Vinay Sinha, Priti, who has previously backed films like David (2013) and Stumped (2003), tells mid-day, "The family has put their faith in us by giving us the rights [to a film on their life]. Ajay and I are excited to depict the fascinating journey of passion, hardship and success of three generations of the family that established the horror empire in India."

A source close to the development tells mid-day, "The Ramsay Brothers have made over 30 horror films in India. They are the masters of the horror genre, and that will be shown in the biopic. As of now, the makers are yet to decide whether this project should be a movie or a web series." The source adds that Devgn will not double up as a cast-member for this offering.

The Ramsay Brothers have given the Indian film industry horror hits like Veerana (1988), Purana Mandir (1984), Darwaza (1978), Bandh Darwaza (1990) and Purani Haveli (1989), among others. While Tulsi Ramsay passed away in December 2018, Shyam Ramsay succumbed to pneumonia two months ago
