After months of anticipation, Amole Gupte’s Saina Nehwal biopic goes on the floors today with Shraddha Kapoor playing the ace shuttler who entered the history books with a bronze at the London Olympics in 2012 and at the recentlyconcluded Asian Games in Jakarta. She bagged the first individual medal for India in 36 years in women’s badminton, followed by PV Sindhu who won a historic silver. Before this, Syed Modi’s bronze in men’s singles at the 1982 Games in New Delhi was the only individual medal for India at the Asiads. Shraddha has pretty large shoes to fill but there are no signs of pressure as she kicks off the shoot in Mumbai.
Speaking to Mirror on Friday, she said, “I’m really excited about this film. Saina is the country’s sweetheart, a champion and a youth icon. It’s a challenging role for an actor as it requires an immense amount of transformation.”
They will kick off with interior scenes and when asked if Saina and her family would be on the set, Shraddha replied, “I hope they are. It will be nice to have them there, along with their support.”
Amole has found many similarities in appearance between the two. Does she think they are similar in personality and thought? “Well, I can relate to her journey. She has bounced back so many times and her journey has been a real rollercoaster,” Shraddha added.
The 31-year-old actress has been undergoing extensive training for the Bhushan Kumar production and in a recent interview, had revealed that she has been waking up at 6 am every day to train. By the end of the film will she have mastered the sport? “I will find out,” she said.
Meanwhile, her first horror comedy, Stree, is still going great guns after a three-week run at the box-office and Shraddha is on a high. “It feels great that my film is doing so well. At the same time, I don’t want to get too attached to success. I want to keep my focus on my work,” she said.
