Last Friday, actor Sushant Singh took to the social media with a request for his followers. “This is an appeal, friends. My younger sister Sofiya has been diagnosed with CIDP (Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy). An auto-immune disorder, its only treatment, of steroids and immunosuppressants, isn’t working. Trying to find any new breakthrough, please help us reach out to the right people,” the actor stated.
When Mirror reached out to Sushant, who has hosted the TV show Savdhaan India and featured in Lipstick Under My Burkha recently, he informed that his post has already garnered a series of suggestions and recommendations. “I am a very private person, but I had to seek advice online after all the available conventional treatments proved futile. I’m thankful to everyone who came forward to help. So many people have responded with alternative therapies and further treatment suggestions. We are getting the best of advice from a lot of people,” he informs, adding that his sister was diagnosed with the rare condition only a few months ago.
The actor informs that CIDP is a neurological disorder in which one’s body starts attacking itself. “The nerves get inflamed and start getting damaged with the patient eventually losing control over their motor skills, followed by muscle-wasting,” he adds.
For Sofiya, who was undergoing treatment in Delhi, Sushant and his family are now exploring other alternatives like Ayurveda, yoga and clinical trials for stem cell therapies. “We are also talking to people who have survived the condition. In fact, there is a forum on Twitter that connects people who are suffering from rare diseases. I got in touch with them and learnt of RamG Vallath, a motivational speaker who has beaten the disease and written books on it. I emailed him immediately and he responded with his contact number. I will soon connect him with my sister,” he shares.
Then, there’s a neurolinguist (an expert on neural mechanisms that control comprehension, production, acquisition of language) who is now in touch with Sofiya. “People from all walks of life have come forward out of the goodness of their hearts and I’m touched. We needed this positivity,” Sushant signs off.
