Pity is a Greek flick directed by Babis Makridis about a person who has got addicted to sadness and people pitying for him. He goes to shocking, insane and amusing lengths to ensure that people pity him all the time. The premise is interesting and the execution by Babis Makridis is excellent. The use of long silences, nothingness and supers on black screen make the whole experience worthwhile and novel. The humour is neatly infused in the film and the use of opera style-background score takes the film to another level. Both Efthymis Filippou and Babis Makridis deserve special mention for their writing, especially for the ‘death song’ – it gives goosebumps! When it comes to performances, Yannis Drakopoulos is outstanding in the leading role. It must have been a challenge to play the part of a person who has forgotten to smile and emote. Yannis is absolutely natural. Evi Saoulidou is nice as the wife. The actors playing the kid, the laundry guy and the neighbor also put their best foot forward. The review would be incomplete without the mention of Konstantinos Koukoulios’s cinematography. It’s breathtaking! Pity was screened at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and it’ll surely make a lot of noise at other major film festivals of the world. Don’t miss!
