Actor starts shooting for the real-life story of actress Ruth Wilson’s grandparents on May 8 in Northern Ireland

Silver Linings Playbook and The Big Sick actor Anupam Kher, who recently wrapped up his Indo- American wedding-comedy Singh In The Rain, will start filming a three-part drama series for the BBC. Titled Mrs Wilson, it kicks off on May 8 in Northern Ireland.

Featuring acclaimed actress Ruth Wilson in the lead, the series is based on the real-life story of her grandparents — secret agent, MI6 officer and novelist Alexander Wilson and his third wife, Alison. Set between 1940s and 1960s in London, the story follows Alison, who thinks she is happily married until her husband dies and a woman turns up at her doorstep claiming to be the real Mrs Wilson. Determined to prove the validity of her marriage and Alec’s love for her, Alison stumbles into a world of disturbing secrets.

Iain Glen, best known for his role as Ser Jorah Mormont in the super-hit Game of Thrones series, will play Alec Wilson. The series also features The Durrells’ actor Keeley Hawes and Harry Potter’s Fiona Shaw. Written by Anna Symon and directed by Richard Laxton, prep began on April 16 in Northern Ireland and London.

“The real story has an Indian angle too. After serving as a spy in World War I, Alec had moved to India in the ’30s to teach English literature, and while here, he began writing spy novels. That’s where Anupam’s character comes into the picture too. He plays a significant role in retracing Alec’s Indian sojourn,” a source says.

Anupam, who is presently in the UK filming his upcoming political-drama, The Accidental Prime Minister, in which he plays the former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, tells Mirror, “Mrs Wilson is set against a very interesting backdrop and follows a gripping storyline. It had me hooked as I read it. It is also great to be a part of such a talented ensemble cast. I am looking forward to shooting with them next month.”
