Days after the song “Manikyala Malaraya Poovi” from the upcoming
Malayalam film, Oru Adaar Love, went viral online, a group of youths
from Hyderabad Old City have lodged a complaint at the Falaknuma police
against it for “mentioning Prophet Mohammed’s wife Khadijah Bibi.”The group demanded a ban on the song, saying it hurt their religious sentiments.
The police have acknowledged the complaint and assured the youths of examining it. Falaknuma Police Inspector P Yadagiri said that the cops are studying the contents of the complaint.
Main complainant, Mohammed Abdul Muqeeth Khan, told Mirror, “I don’t want publicity. I am an ordinary student who is not willing to take to streets or mobilise people for a protest. I went through the lyrics yesterday on YouTube as the song became very popular. Then, I tried to understand it through Google translation, and found that the song takes the name of our Prophet’s wife, Khadijah Bibi. And I felt I should raise objection to it.”
Muqeeth also said that he is not against the song. “I would have liked it if it hadn’t made a mention of the Prophet’s wife,” he explained.
A video clip from the song, featuring actress Priya Prakash Varrier, has been viewed more than 14 million times. Abdul Kauser, a businessman who also signed the complaint, said, “We don’t take to streets. But we will fight for protection of our religious sentiments through legal means.”
