After he impressed with his dance moves in Remo D’Souza’s dance drama, ABCD: Any Body Can Dance 2, and more recently, to the remixed chartbusters, “Oonchi Hai Building” and “Tan Tana Tan” in director-dad David Dhawan’s Judwaa 2, Varun Dhawan has now filmed a racy hip-hop video, titled Ready To Shuffle. Featuring alongside rappers Divine (whose life has inspired Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, featuring Ranveer Singh in a character modelled on Divine and his frequent collaborator rapper-DJ Naezy) and Malaysian-Tamil rapper Sri Rascol, Varun is seen hip-hopping, b-boying, rapping and free-styling in colourful jumpsuits with glossy blue highlights in his hair. The actor admits that the fast-paced beats and pumping lyrics are aimed at making everybody get up and “shuffle”.

“I’ve joined hands with some of the coolest hip-hop stars for this movement. Around two months ago, we set off on a journey to zero in on the finest hip-hop dancers and crew members from across the country. The plan was to handpick the best and get them down to Mumbai so that they could participate in India’s biggest hip-hop dance festival. Now, after five regional rounds in Kolkata, Guwahati, Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai, the grand finale will be in Mumbai on November 11 and I’m extremely excited to be judging it. It’s an honour, it’s gonna be real awesome, y’all!” Varun exclaims, channelling the inner rapper in him.

Varun is also glad that the festival offers a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh for the ‘Breakers’, ‘Poppers’ and ‘All Style Crews’ — which are the three categories that he will be judging across 16 rounds. “Hip-hop as a culture has been growing in popularity in India over the last few years and several breakout artists of this once-underground genre are now headlining music festivals and making their way into Bollywood. I truly believe that hip-hop is not only about looking or acting cool. This genre of music and dance expresses what other songs fail to. So this festival gives everyone the freedom to portray hip-hop as a voice and a movement,” Varun asserts.

The mantra of the movement is to “Live life in colour” and apart from Varun, the panel also features international judges like Differ Kim, Marie Poppins and The Kinjaz, all of whom will perform at the event. Popular comedians Abish Mathew and Kenny Sebastian will also enthral with their wisecracks, while Desi Hoppers with Shantanu Maheshwari are all set to rock the stage.

“It is going to be an evening of expressive art forms that allow people from different backgrounds to come together and create something positive. I cannot wait for it,” Varun signs off with a smile.
