Mirror (April 4) was the first to report that Maine Pyar Kiya girl Bhagyashree’s son, Abhimanyu Dassani, is gearing up to enter Bollywood with a quirky action comedy, Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, directed by Vasan Bala. Abhimanyu has been paired with Radhika Madan, who played the lead in Ekta Kapoor’s TV soap, Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi, in this Ronnie Screwvala production. The film kicked off on Saturday in Mumbai.
Abhimanyu who went through a month-and-a-half of auditions before signing it, describes his first day as “magical”. He was an assistant director on a couple of films but this was his first time facing a camera and the fact had yet to sink in. “But I’m really excited,” he beams.
He recalls how he had heard from his martial arts trainer about the film and auditioned for it just for the experience. “I went through some workshops with a group of six boys and six girls. But whenever I’d ask Vasan sir for feedback, he’d put me off saying ‘Tomorrow’ till the day he said, ‘Call your dad and tell him aaj se tu humara beta hai,’ and I knew I was on,” Abhimanyu says.
He has watched many martial arts films and has gone through eight months of training as the film requires him to be proficient in Taekwondo, Choi Kwang Do, Mixed Martial Arts and Wing Chun. Radhika too has gone through the same sessions and admits it was difficult initially. “I had no interest in action earlier, but the script is so good that I had to put in my 200 per cent. Now, I wait for action sequences to come on when watching a movie,” laughs the actress who signed the film five months after her show ended. After a typical bahubeti avatar, her fans will see her as the modern Supri.
Abhimanyu’s Surya is an interesting, purposeful character at the centre of this coming-of-age adventure. “My parents (Bhagyashree and Himalaya) are so kicked I have to calm them down. Their biggest gift to me is the confidence to be myself,” he asserts.
Prod him on why he isn’t being launched by his home banner and he says that even though his parents have always been supportive, it’s ultimately his journey which is why he started as an AD and aims to go up the ladder, rung by rung. “There was never any discussion on me being launched by my dad nor did I think about it,” he says firmly.
And has he ever spoken to his actress-mother on why she chose to leave Bollywood so early in her career? “I think she had her priorities and I’m glad she was an active part of my childhood as it shaped me into the man that I am today. I hope I can make her proud,” he signs off.
