Mirror (May 3) was the first to report that National Award-winning filmmaker Rajesh Mapuskar will be directing a musical produced by Ashutosh Gowariker, who played the protagonist in his Marathi comedy-drama, Ventilator. We have now learnt that the film is based on the Shillong Chamber Choir which rose to fame after winning the second season of the talent hunt show, India’s Got Talent (IGT), in October 2010.
“I wanted to make a musical after Ferrari Ki Sawaari and after listening to the choir, I started chasing them. I’ve been researching the subject for the last four years and go to Shillong often to spend time with them, understand the landscape and culture as it is a completely different space from mine. I’m waiting to tell their fascinating story to the world,” informs Rajesh who starts shooting next year.
Founded in 2001 by Neil Nongkynrih, it is a multi-genre choir which performed at the Rashtrapati Bhavan for former US President Barack Obama and then First Lady Michelle Obama during their state visit. They have teamed up with Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Usha Uthup and in 2010, bagged three gold awards at the 6th World Choir Games for Musica Sacra, Gospel and Popular Music. “Their journey in the film will be documented with some of the choir members, along with professional actors. We will be shooting in Shillong and across India once I finish the script,” he signs off.
