BOMBAY TIMES (October 9, 2017)

After the first look of the three principal characters of Padmavati -Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor -garnered appreciation from all quarters, the movie's much anticipated trailer will be launched digitally today, at 13:03 pm (IST).

Interestingly, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director of the magnum opus, began his tryst with Padmavati nine years ago, when he became the first Indian to direct an opera in Paris and Rome with his musical venture on the subject. It made its debut at the 51st Spoleto Festival and garnered immense praise and accolades.

Now, the filmmaker is retelling the epic tale - of Rani Padmavati, the legendary Mewar queen known as much for her beauty and intelligence as for her courage and valour, Maharawal Ratan Singh, the glorious Rajput warrior king who gave his all to the battlefield, and the ambitious and the obsessive Sultan Alauddin Khilji - in the form of a visual extravaganza on screen.

The timing of the trailer launch has a special significance, as it was in 1303 AD that Rawal Singh first fought Khilji. Paying homage to a glorious era and classical folk music, the trailer promises a glimpse of what's in store - a classic romance between the characters of Deepika and Shahid, who are pairing up on screen for the first time, and Ranveer in a never seen-before menacing avatar.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali says, “I'm overwhelmed by the love the film has received so far. Padmavati is a tribute to our brave Rajput men and women and a story that the entire country will be proud of.“

Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, added, “We've been consistently on a path to produce and present ground-breaking movies in myriad ways. Padmavati, the long cherished collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is our epic historical drama, a genre that is a favourite with the Indian moviegoer and celebrates mass Hindi cinema at its glorious best. This first trailer will truly bring to life our endeavour to redefine Indian cinema.“

Padmavati, produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions, releases on December 1.
