While we are celebrating the trend of female-oriented films like the recently released Secret Superstar or the still-to-release Anushka Sharma’s Pari, and Vidya Balan’s Tumhari Sulu or Deepika Padukone’s Padmavati, the fact is, these are just exceptions.

A lot of female-oriented films never made it beyond the script stage, even if they were small-budget films. Not just small writers and directors, even a big filmmaker like Farah Khan is facing that problem. It appears that her plan to make a film with a female protagonist may not happen.

Not one to back down, the filmmaker is now considering turning the subject into a web series. Farah reasons, “I had planned to make a small film before I started a big film, but realised that big film or small, the struggle is the same. You still have to get the script right. We were not happy with the second half of the script. Like my husband Shirish Kunder points out, you don’t make money with small films and if it doesn’t work, you get abused. It is better to make big films. We did try making a small film but every film has its destiny. Maybe, I’ll make a web series out of it.”
