After directing the 2011 horror series Anhoniyon Ka Andhera and hosting the crime-thriller Ishq Kills in 2014, Vikram Bhatt returns to television as a showrunner with Ishq Gunaah, an Indian adaptation of the Turkish romantic-drama Ask-i Memnu. Incidentally, it also marks Sanjay Kapoor’s comeback to the small screen 13 years after Karishma: A Miracle of Destiny. Smriti Kalra plays his love interest. Niki Aneja, whose last prominent TV outing was Astitva... Ek Prem Kahani, and Tum Bin 2 actor Aashim Gulati also feature in pivotal roles.

“I really liked the story of a girl who marries someone twice her age and is trying hard to keep it going. The show is unique as it dwells on the significance of intimacy in a marriage. Sanjay and Smriti’s characters face this conflict,” says Vikram. About the Star Plus show’s late night slot, he quips, “I have always said that yesterday’s bold conversation is today’s important conversation.” On the choice of the leading man, he insists that the team wanted a suave actor, Sanjay fits the bill. “He has the debonair attitude of a 40-plus man,” Vikram adds.

The filmmaker admits that he doesn’t quite have a finger on what exactly mainstream TV is as he doesn’t watch many shows but he’s heard that viewers are ready for new narratives, which are scarce at the moment. “I get the feeling that they are being involuntarily pushed into regressive entertainment,” he says. Will his own experiences be replicated in the show? “It’s not possible to do something emotional without finding your own reference points in it. Actors find theirs, the same goes for the director and me,” he says.

What’s his take on marriage? “At the end of the day no society, no law and no force can keep a marriage together. Only the will of two people in a marriage can. There will be a thousand reasons to quit, it’s about finding that one reason to stay,” says Vikram.
