When Farhan Akhtar’s banner announced a web series on the dirty side of cricket, comparisons between the female lead (Richa Chadha) and Preity Zinta were inevitable — a celebrity cricket team owner with a stormy love life. Before it releases on a digital platform, the actress, we hear, has reached out to her old buddy Farhan to show her the first cut of Inside Edge.
“Farhan and Preity have been friends for years, and the fact that she has requested for a private screening was revealed at an internal meeting last week. She felt it was imperative that the makers seek her approval before unveiling the series following rumours of similarities between the lead actress’ part and her life,” said a production insider.
Preity jointly owns the Punjab franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with former beau, businessman Ness Wadia. According to reports, their relationship started to turn sour within a year of buying the team. In 2009, Ness allegedly raised his hand on Preity at a party that they attended together. Five years later, Preity accused him of abuse and molestation.
Sources suggest Richa’s role is, at best, inspired by Preity, with just a few instances that may overlap with actual incidents. “There’s nothing in the film that will unnerve someone. Director Karan Anshuman has played it safe. For example, Richa’s boyfriend (Angad Bedi) is a cricketer, not a businessman. The focus is mostly on the corruption side of cricket,” added the insider.
A screening is yet to be organised since Farhan is holidaying in Spain after wrapping up Lucknow Central.
Preity, who is in Los Angeles, maintained, “I have not requested for any screening of that [Inside Edge] or any [other] series.”
Production sources, however, confirmed the story.
