3 Idiots

A classic Bollywood flick in India, a panned affair in Mexico — this is how 3 Idiots has gone through a roller coaster ride of sorts, what with its Spanish remake version turning out to be a huge disappointment for the locals there. Made with a Spanish cast and released just a few weeks back, the film titled 3 Idiotas was directed by Carlos Bolado. However, it pretty much released unannounced and then went away without making much of a noise either.

Informs our source, “They kept the core idea of 3 Idiots intact and their publicity material was loyal to the Rajkumar Hirani directed film too as it read: A group of friends embark on a fun adventure determined to find a college roommate who disappeared without a trace on graduation day. The promo, too, gave an indication of a frothy entertainer in the offering. One could also identify the characters that were originally played by Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor and Omi Vaidya. The film had a cool campus look to it and the music was vibrant too.”

Still, if the reports of the remake are an indication, the film missed out on retaining the ethos of the original, while heartwarming moments were missing, too, due to which 3 Idiotas didn’t find many takers. The reviews were largely scathing and even commercially, the film didn’t generate much moolah.

“The film is now set for release in US,” our source adds, “While in Mexico, it released on March 31, it arrives in US on June 2. The release would be small though and the film would soon enough find a way on digital forums.”

While Aamir Khan is currently busy showing Dangal to the Chinese audiences, one wonders what he has to say about the Mexican remake of his 3 Idiots not quite meeting expectations on the other side of the world.
