Priyanka Chopra admits she has locked three Hindi films

Priyanka Chopra sashays into a sea-facing suburban resto-bar, with a pout and admits that she has missed Mumbai. With all the surfing boards around, along with a seven-foot cut-out of Dwayne Johnson which she immediately hugs, Mumbai isn’t all that different from Miami. Once inside however, PeeCee complains of the heat, asking for the air-conditioner to be upped.

She’d been looking forward to a three-week staycation which had to be cut down to a five-day break. She flies back to the US on Friday to join her Baywatch costar, Dwayne, who in a special video apologizes that his shoot in Atlanta has kept him away from his Indian fans. Meanwhile, PeeCee’s Indian fans are wondering when she’s returning to home turf.

“Many Bollywood filmmakers met me in New York and several in Mumbai too. There are a lot of offers and I’ve locked three films. I hope to start one by the year-end and the second, next year,” she reveals.

Would one of them be the Kalpana Chawla biopic? The 34-year-old actress sighs, “I will know what is happening with Quantico season three in May. I have a contract with them and I’m bound to them first. If they decide to have more seasons, they will call me and I have to shoot. It will be a long commitment so I cannot announce my Hindi films or schedule shooting dates.”

Buzz is, the ratings of her ABC television series have dropped and the makers are undecided about how to take the story forward. “Reports of Joshua (Safran, Quantico Creator) unable to figure out how to develop the storyline, has nothing to do with the announcement of Season 3. After every season, the channel does a consensus on which show should come back for another season, which should announce its final season and which should be cancelled,” she explains.

Should Quantico not be renewed, will she return home given that she hasn’t signed any new Hollywood films after Baywatch?

“You can’t just arrive in a new country and ask for a film, people have to warm up to you first. ABC offered me Quantico and the English films offered to me after Quantico were interesting. I’m not an insecure actress, I don’t mind starting from ground zero, walking into a room and saying, ‘Hi, I’m Priyanka Chopra and I am an Indian actress.’ I believe there is no shortage of good work for good people and fortunately I have more than enough projects on my plate,” she says.

Back home, there’s talk that she’s doing the Sahir Ludhianvi biopic being produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. True? She answers with a laugh, “Just because I’m Sanjay sir’s favourite, everyone asks me if I’m working with him. We have spoken and we are working on something together, but I cannot announce anything until June. For now, I am only sure that Padmavati is going to be a beautiful film. Ranveer (Singh), Deepika (Padukone) and Shahid (Kapoor) look lovely. I met Sanjay sir recently and he showed some rushes. Lucky me!”

Although she won the Miss World beauty pageant almost two decades ago, Priyanka Chopra tasted international fame in the true sense with her stint as FBI agent Alex Parrish on American crime drama Quantico. After season 1 ended on a high, the makers got a go-ahead to take the show forward. But all good things must come to an end — or so it seems.

Season 2 has reportedly failed to keep the audience engaged and with dipping TRPs, getting the show back on TV might prove to be a challenge. In fact, Quantico writer Joshua Saffron recently admitted they are unsure of a third season.

Priyanka also admits, “After every season, the channel [ABC] goes back to the drawing board and take a consensus to see which shows should return for another season and which stand cancelled, apart from a review of their budgets. Right now, we are in that phase. After season 1, we didn’t know if season 2 would happen until May last year. So now, we are still waiting to see if there will be a season 3”
