Over the last two days,
Sanjay Gupta has blocked over 150 trolls on his micro-blogging account.
The reason: he was being abused for showing Hrithik Roshan wearing a
watch in Kaabil, in which he plays a visually-challenged man. Someone on
social media took a screen shot of a frame from the teaser and pointed
out that the hero was seen sporting a watch. He wondered why a
visually-impaired man is wearing a watch. Within hours, this snowballed
into a troll session, where netizens ganged up against the filmmaker,
forcing him to block several of them.
Reliving the Saturday morning horror, Sanjay told BT, “It's appalling how educated people have little knowledge about those with disabilities. I suppose people aren't aware that there are Braille watches available in the market. Indian companies are manufacturing these special devices. Some of them even tell the time if you merely press a button. It's ludicrous that people are questioning the fact that I set out to make a film and made such a big blunder. How can they even expect me to make such a glaring error? They think I didn't research enough before making Hrithik wear that time piece.“
The filmmaker insists that the Braille watch was included in the narrative with good reason. “Trust me, when you see the film, you will agree that the watch plays an important part in the narrative. I can't divulge more than that right now but looking at what started off on social media, I think we're living in a country where people jump the gun and derive pleasure in running someone's efforts down.“
