Lay You Down video: When dictators want to rule a country, they first try getting rid of the art

Raw, rebellious and
risqué... That's how many are describing the video of DJ Nanok's latest
electro-single Lay You Down, which broke the internet this week. In this
sensuous, aesthetically-shot song, musicians Anushka Manchanda and
Monica Dogra play lovers, who express their emotions through kisses,
love-making and erotic dance choreography. Since its release, the video
has already garnered a lot of views online and become a topic of
discussion and debate.
Anushka believes that the video addresses the taboo topic of homosexuality, and tries to break the stigma surrounding it. “It's not bold to be in love; it's normal. We just wanted to create something beautiful and present what is a common reality. I know our intentions are good. So, no matter what happens, I can stand up for my work and protect it, because I believe in it. The idea for this video actually came from Jai Vaswani (Nanok). His song asked for something that was sensual and full of love.“
Despite its theme, her family supported her decision to feature in this bold single. “While I was editing the video, my dad was in and out of the process. It was interesting to note his reactions and see the footage from his perspective,“ she says.
Navzar Eranee, who has directed the video, shares that the thought behind the concept wasn't to titillate or shatter any stereotypes, but to normalise the idea that people can be in love, regardless of their gender. “The video is a reflection of the times we live in. It's perfectly natural. We can bridge the gap between who we are and our created selves for public acceptance. There must be room for open-minded logical conversations. I believe any form of art has the ability to change people's perceptions. That is why when dictators want to rule a country, they first try getting rid of the art. History has already proven that.“
Anushka adds why a video like this might help in breaking taboos and make people more accepting, “This world is full of hatred. Right now, all we need is love. The taboo is only in the minds of people who don't understand it or refuse to accept something that is perfectly natural.“
