Neerja Birla, founder of MPower, an organisation that works towards tackling mental health issues among youngsters, recently launched the EverydayHeroes campaign along with Hrithik Roshan. In a chat with BT, the two talk about why we need to get rid of the stigma surrounding mental disorders.

What is Mpower?
Neerja Birla: It was set up to empower individuals and families suffering from mental health concerns by spreading awareness, alleviating stigma, advocating prevention and fostering education. Through our centre and foundation, we provide holistic mental healthcare services to children and young people from all walks of life. We have also launched 'Imagine by Mpower', a merchandise label that tackles stigma.

Tell us about EverydayHeroes and what is the plan going forward?
Neerja: It is a campaign to recognise and reach out to individuals who may be battling mental health concerns with or without any support.Having Hrithik on board is great because we can get the message out effectively. We're also kicking off a mental health programme to provide schools with resources to address concerns on campus. We are lining up events such as music concerts to directly engage with children and the youth and take this important message to them. A weekly social media live session with our professionals offers an opportunity for people to reach out and ask questions about mental health. The 'EverydayHeroes' blog provides a platform for people to share their experiences of living with mental illness or caring for someone who is suffering. There is comfort and inspiration in the knowledge that you are not alone.
Hrithik: I'm so happy to be a part of MPower's EverydayHeroes campaign, which celebrates the people who speak up, seek help and overcome all kinds of odds to get on the path of healing. I shot a film for this campaign to encourage people to be open about mental health concerns and also to bring attention to the need to stamp out stigma in our society.
