BAAR BAAR DEKHO VS FREAKY ALI!

It was just last month that Bollywood saw an intense box office clash between Mohenjo Daro and Rustom in which the latter emerged victorious and the former met with a terrible fate. And now the industry gets ready for another clash but the scale of the fight is not that epic though. Baar Baar Dekho and Freaky Ali are set to clash tomorrow but the former is a biggie while the latter is moderately budgeted. Hence, it’s not the fight of the equals and if all goes well, both can excel.

Baar Baar Dekho stars Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif and is the first joint venture between Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Farhan Akhtar-Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment. It’s directed by newcomer Nitya Mehra. The film is about a character jumping into future within a few days but it does not have too much of technology and isn’t a sci fi film. It’s essentially a romcom and the time travel bit gives the movie a unique touch. The promotions have been novel as well. Instead of coming up with the trailer first and then the songs, the makers instead released the song first – the promotional track Kala Chashma. And it became an overnight hit. In fact, Kala Chashma is the biggest hit song of the year so far. It was loved so much and the film’s buzz went so high that even when the promo failed to meet the desired expectations, it still didn’t really affect the film in any way. Both Sidharth and Katrina look great and the film is bound to take a huge opening (10-12 crore plus for sure). It can even go higher and cross the 16-17 crore mark, making it the biggest opener of Sidharth, ahead of Ek Villain. After that, it will be the content that will do the talking.

Freaky Ali meanwhile stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a leading role. It is directed by Sohail Khan and presented by Salman Khan. Amy Jackson, Arbaaz Khan, Nikitin Dheer and others are also a part of it. It’s a light-hearted movie of a lower class man who excels in the game of golf, considered to be a game for the rich. Songs haven’t really worked big time but the promos have done the trick. It’s not a completely mindless film and hence, expecting it to collect more than Baar Baar Dekho or even earn 7-8 crores would be a little too much. But if appreciation is there, it can rise from Day 2. The film will also suffer from comparisons with Hollywood comic caper Happy Gilmore. Both films looks extremely similar.
