Director Priyadarshan is all set to come back with his
next — Malayalam film Oppam (Together) — starring Mohanlal. Releasing
in September the revenge drama is about a blind elevator operator who
witnesses a murder but if he doesn’t prove whose the killer, he will be
accused of the crime. Hrithik Roshan is also playing a blind character
in Sanjay Gupta’s Kaabil, who seeks vengeance for the death of his
wife. However Priyadarshan dismisses any similarity between the two
films, “I don’t think it’s true. Oppam was initially a short story
written by Govind Vijayan, which Mohanlal asked me to develop into a
film. I have written the story and screenplay. The thrilling part is
that the protagonist has the killer next to him all the time watching
his every move. It’s a cat and mouse game between the hero and villain.”
The film will release during the Onam festival this year. Priyan’s last
film released in 2014. “Yes, I am directing a film after two years. It
took a long time as I was facing a lot of personal problems during that
time but now I am at peace. When your personal life gets rough, it
disturbs your creativity. Work is a pleasure. I have made 90 films so
hopefully I will hit a century soon.”
Priyadarshan wants to do a
remake of Oppam in Hindi but after he completes directing his next,
which is being produced by Rohit Shetty. He says, “I want to make Oppam
in Hindi but I am discussing another film with Akshay Kumar. It’s the
best script that I have written and is a hilarious comedy — a complete
family entertainer. If I make Oppam in Hindi, I will have to rewrite the
script to suit the tastes of the Hindi audience. It doesn’t have a
romantic track so I have to make those kind of adjustments. Right now, I
am waiting for Akshay’s nod. I have always been lucky with Akshay so if
he permits I will start that film first. He has liked the story line I
have given him. He has never asked me what are you making? I just
narrate it to him. My relationship with Akshay and Mohanlal is based on
trust. They both say they don’t want to hear my script but will see it
while shooting. That’s the kind of trust they both have in me. It
becomes a big responsibility for me to prove their faith in me is
right.”
